The Ectoplasmic Panhellenic Investigation - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
At Middleman HQ, Ida is listening in to emergency channels and spots Tyler Ford in the lobby. Wendy wants to go see him and find out what he wants, but the Middleman warns that Tyler may know too much. Ida determines that Tyler didn’t remember anything due to his two-day amnesia battling lucha libre wrestlers but had found their address in his appointment book, and sends him away.

Later, Wendy is talking to her mother when Tyler approaches her to talk about her car… again. He asks her for help and she ignores her pager, and he’s reveals he’s on a quest to find what happened in those two days. Tyler recalls meeting a soul mate, and has a check from the Booty Chest. The manager there has confirmed he flirted with a waitress at Wendy’s address. Wendy introduces herself… but Tyler has Lacey’s name.

Wendy goes to work while talking to Lacey, who doesn’t recall Tyler. The Middleman cuts her off to have Ida play an emergency call from a sorority, Omega Theta Nu. They go to investigate, although Wendy thinks it’s a prank, and the Middleman asks how things are going with Lacey. Before he can pursue it further, they bring in the fraternity brother, Louis, who was sneaking in as a pledge prank when a ghost attacked him. The Middleman determines that Louis has no pineal gland. Back at HQ, they determine that Louis can see and hear ghosts and they have Ida start working on duplicating the effects in a mechanical device. The Middleman notes that there is only one place he can’t get into: a sorority. Wendy can get the handshake from Lacey, whose mother was a member of the sorority.

Back at the sublet, Lacey demonstrates the sorority chant and wonders if Wendy wants to go out with Tyler. Wendy denies wanting to date Tyler and Lacey plans to date him. Wendy then picks up a pair of pineal glasses and prepares to infiltrate the sorority. Wendy goes in and sorority sister Eleanor informs her that they don’t use handshakes any more, and greets her with a hug. As she does, a ghostly wind springs up. When Wendy dons the glasses she sees five female ghosts pleading for help.

During the tour, Wendy runs into another sorority girl, Allie, who is suspicious of her. She’s then introduced to Dana, the sorority president, and sees a ghostly duplicate of her. Wendy gets to the restroom and informs the Middleman of what’s going on, and he tells her to send in all of her data.

Tyler arrives at the sublet and talks to Noser about Tyler. Meanwhile, Wendy assembles her equipment and finds Allie listening at the door. She gets a call from Lacey about how she’s together with Tyler. Allie commiserates with her and then apologizes for her overreaction. When she realizes Wendy actually knows the sorority handshake, she tries to tell her something but Eleanor interrupts them and Allie makes a hasty exit.

Downstairs, Wendy tries to decipher what the female ghosts are signaling and they finally communicate that Eleanor isn’t there and Wendy should check her out… just as Allie puts a pillowcase over Wendy. Wendy drops the glasses but manages to trigger the emergency alert on her Middlewatch. However, Wendy is taken outside for an official welcome to Omega Theta Nu. Wendy notices that the five officers and Eleanor don’t know the cheer. Allie talks to Wendy while the others chant and says Eleanor is behind whatever’s going on. The Middleman arrives and hastily tries to explain he’s her brother and a campus security officer.

Lacey gives Tyler the grand tour of the sublet and he starts to remember meeting an amazing girl that he wanted to kiss. Meanwhile, Ida runs a background check on Eleanor and determines she has the qualifications for an evil scientist. Without the pineal-glasses, Wendy comes up with an alternate plan: having Louis (still dressed as a woman) come in to interpret for the ghosts. He translates that they were lured to the physics building. The Middleman goes to the physics lab and finds five of Eleanor’s women friends unconscious and strapped into a quantum processor. Eleanor confronts him and explains that the sorority wouldn’t accept her so she has projected her friends’ minds into the five sorority officers. She plans to have them throw a wild party and discredit the sorority once and for all. The Middleman prepares to shoot her but discovers that her technology negates his gun. She quickly gets to a table and projects herself into the Middleman’s body, expelling his spirit.

Eleanor/Middleman goes outside to find Wendy coming to check out the situation. She/he explains that the machine jammed his communicator but he’s already blown up the machine and disposed of Eleanor. Wendy starts to go to the sorority but Eleanor/Middleman says to give them some time. She goes home to find Tyler preparing to leave with Lacey on a date, but she discovers they have a shared interest in zombie movies. Lacey quickly interrupts them and heads out with Tyler. Wendy tries to watch the movie without success and calls Allie at the sorority for a talkdown. She hears a party in the background and Allie explains that Eleanor/Middleman is hosting the party. Wendy prepares to leave and finds Louis waiting for her. He translates for the Middleman and explains the situation.

Wendy and Louis go the sorority house and the Middleman sends Louis to get the police. Wendy warns against it, saying that bringing in the police will destroy the house. Wendy makes a heartfelt plea to come up with another way to stop them, and the Middleman suggests they get the emotional re-router in the trunk of the Middlemobile. Wendy gets the device and triggers it in the middle of the crowd. Everyone gets incredibly depressed but Eleanor/Middleman confronts them. Wendy attacks him but they’re evenly matched thanks to Eleanor having the Middleman’s muscle memory. They end up in a slap fight on the lawn and Eleanor/Middleman gets the advantage until some fraternity brothers intervene. Eleanor/Middleman gets to the car and the automatic security system drives him to Middleman HQ. Wendy recovers consciousness and tries to warn Ida, who initially doesn’t believe her. Eleanor/Middleman is already there examining the HEYDAR, and Ida realizes he’s an impostor. She goes for a tranquilizer but Eleanor/Middleman activates the panic room shutdown and sets the HEYDAR on overload: her spirit will return automatically to her body.

The Middleman explains through Louis that Ida has engaged the emergency incursion protocol and cut off all communications. The Middleman comes up with a plan for Wendy to release the trapped spirits at the physics labs, and Lacey calls about her date. Allie takes the phone and tells Lacey that Wendy really likes Tyler. They head out, arguing. At the lab, Wendy shuts off the transference device and Ida falls through the roof and lands on the Middleman just as he becomes the Middleman again. She tranqs him to be on the safe side, while Wendy takes Eleanor and the others into custody.

Later, Wendy and the Middleman recover and apologize for punching each other. The Middleman notes that he wants to help Wendy with her emotional burden if he can. He then notes that Wendy has to keep an eye on Tyler and she needs to inform him if Tyler starts to recover his missing memories.

Back at the sublet, Wendy insists on talking things out with Lacey, who informs her roommate she’s broken up with Tyler and lies about having any feelings. Wendy quickly sees through the lie but Lacey says she and Tyler agreed that they didn’t have any chemistry together. Wendy goes to see Tyler, who after Lacey’s vegan dinner had to get some wings at the Booty Chest. He says that he talked to a busboy there who confirmed it was Wendy he met at the sports bar. Tyler starts to remember a little bit of his missing two days, and they end up watching a zombie movie together.
