At Middleman HQ, the team goes over the theft of a Beryllium sphere and an oscillation overthruster. The criminal has left a pictogram on a mirror at the scene of each crime. The Middleman tries to decipher the pictograms without success and finally says Wendy might as well go on her date with Tyler. At the sublet, Tyler shows up three hours late and gives her a diamond tennis bracelet and admits he kind of loves her. She confesses her love for him as well, but they’re both interrupted by pages from their bosses. The Middleman has an offbeat theory and Wendy convinces him to let her go. However, Tyler needs to meet with Manservant Neville, who sends a helicopter to pick him up.
The next day, Wendy tells Lacey what happened and Lacey assures her that nothing has changed. Wendy’s called into work where they’ve discovered a new theft. Tyler calls Wendy to apologize and set up a date for that night. However, Wendy is going to have to postpone until the next night because of her job. They arrive at a toy store to find that someone has stolen all the eyes from the dolls. The owner reports that the thief left a mirror with a drawing of a river on it. They realize the clues add up to a palindrome and the eyes are made of polydichloride. All the components can be used to make a quantum singularity machine, creating a gateway to parallel dimensions. They locate the power source and find the villain, the Palindrome, with a goatee and a black suit. He’s preparing to power up his machine. The air is filled with gaseous polydichloride which will ignite if they fire their guns. The Middleman distracts the Palindrome while Wendy sneaks around to shut off the machine. However, the Palindrome refuses to monologue and activates his device. He’s sucked through the gateway and Wendy is pulled in after him.
Wendy wakes up just after the Palindrome flees, but she follows him out into a devastated landscape ruled by… Fatboy Industries. Manservant Neville broadcasts propaganda across the city on giant TV screens while people live in crushing poverty. When the security force spots her, she flees and everyone is summoned to give the pledge. Wendy tries to contact the Middleman on her Middlewatch without success.
Wendy arrives at the sublet to find Noser testing her knowledge of movie trivia. The sublet is now an exotic dance club and Joe 90 runs the place and doesn’t know her. Lacey, a brunette, knows her and slaps her because of their history at Fatboy Darning Camp. Lacey accuses Wendy of deserting her after Fatboy Industries took over their art school, and didn’t show up for the protest. That was five years ago and Wendy hasn’t been seen since. Security forces arrive and Noser opens fire while Joe 990 gets Wendy out and then abandons her. Pip arrives and rescues Wendy, driving off down the street. In this universe Pip is a priest and willing to risk his life for others.
Back in the real universe, the Middleman goes over the video tape and sees that the Palindrome existed in a gray suit and no facial hair.
Wendy goes to Middleman HQ to find that Ida is a beautiful attractive woman… and still sarcastic. Ida ushers her into the control room where the Middleman wears chaps and no shirt, and has an eye patch. They got an alert on the HEYDAR but aren’t interested in investigating unless he gets paid. Wendy tries to pay him but doesn’t have any of the local currency and has to offer him Tyler’s necklace.
In both universes, Ida identifies the Palindrome as Ivan Avi, and both teams confront the Palindromes… who smashes the singularity machines.
The Middlemen take their Palindromes back to Middleman HQ and try to learn how to access the singularity. It turns out the two Palindromes were born as orphans but in the wrong universes: a good Palindrome in an evil universe and vice versa. When they severed their pituitary glands, they received visions of the other universe. They communicated with each other to switch places, and the good Palindrome apologizes for accidentally transferring Wendy. The good Palindrome explains that if the two Middlemen fire a phased polaron cannon at the same black hole at the same time. The Middleman has a phased polaron cannon and asks the good Palindrome to send a psychic message to his counterpart.
The evil Middleman is beating up the evil Palindrome and Wendy stops him. The evil Middleman reveals he killed Sensei Ping, but is interrupted when the evil Palindrome relays the coordinates. The evil Palindrome lures her in and takes her gun, and the evil Middleman shoots him. The good Palindrome realizes his “brother” is dead. Meanwhile, the evil Middleman explains he sold the phased polaron cannon to Fatboy Industries to pay the rent. Ida explains that the evil Middleman used to be a real Middleman, but when Tyler the Middleboy was killed by a mysterious triggerman with a red anodized ray gun, the evil world’s Middleman turned evil.
Wendy goes to Lacey for help, promising a chance for revenge and an apology. Lacey agrees to help and goes to Joe 90 to blackmail him into letting them Wendy and Lacey into Fatboy Command. Meanwhile the evil Ida appeals to the evil Middleman, suggesting he can redeem himself. When he refuses, evil Ida quits.
Joe 90 takes Wendy and Lacey to Manservant Neville’s private armory and recognizes the combination provided by her security deciphering device. They find the phased polaron cannon but Lacey inadvertently activates a cryogenic chamber containing a frozen Manservant Neville. Neville extends a hand and recognizes Wendy, asking if she’s done enough to him. He says that he tried to return control to the people but she betrayed him. The evil Wendy enters, holding the anodized red ray gun that she killed the evil world’s Tyler with. The evil Wendy explains that when her father disappeared, she vowed to take control (the combination is the date of her father’s disappearance). When she saw Fatboy Industries taking control, she became Neville’s assistant and froze him and then secretly taking control. Joe 90 sounded the silent alarm and betrayed Lacey and Wendy. Evil Wendy kills Joe 90 and calls in the security guards, but Wendy uses her unique training with Sensei Ping to knock her out.
Wendy dresses as Evil Wendy and goes out taking Lacey as a prisoner. However, Evil Wendy has her unique ID and can identify herself to the security guards. Evil Wendy orders the guards to shoot them but the “evil” Middleman arrives on his Middlehog and knocks out the guards. They escape and go to the proper coordinates to fire the phased polaron cannon. The ‘evil” Middleman admits he’s going to leave town and Wendy thanks him. Wendy says goodbye to Lacey as both Middlemen fire the phased polaron cannons in sync, opening the gate. Wendy asks the “evil” Middleman to stay and fight, then steps through. The two Middlemen salute each other before the portal closes. The “evil” Middleman suggests Lacey join him as a temporary employee.
The Middleman drops Wendy off at her sublet and wonders how far he is from his counterpart. She notes that they’re both similar enough that she could count on him to do what is necessary. As she goes into her sublet, she realizes that the diamond bracelet is in her pocket: the “evil” Middleman gave it back.
In the parallel world, the Middleman shaves while Lacey comes in with her new schoolgirl uniform. The Middleman reverts Ida back to her original appearance and they start to go to work.
Wendy is talking to her mother in her apartment while Tyler dozes. She assures her mother that everything’s going fine… while she paints the Middleman.
