Episode Summary

[x] Remove Ad
'Anyone who murdered Colonel Protheroe,' declared the parson, brandishing a carving knife above a joint of roast beef, 'would be doing the world at large a service!'

It was a careless remark for a man of the cloth. And one which was to come back and haunt the clergyman just a few hours later.

Episode Quotes

Miss Marple: (entering) Good evening, Inspector.
Inspector Slack: (disbelieving) St. Mary Mead - of course. Miss Marple!
Miss Marple: I just happened to be ...
Inspector Slack: Of course you did!!!
Miss Marple: I'm sure it will be a great relief to the dear vicar to know that someone so professional - and so energetic - is in charge of the case, Inspector - as indeed it is to me. (Exiting) - Thank you.

Miss Marple: I first came across Inspector Slack over that dreadful business at Gossington Hall when Arthur and Dolly Bantry lived there. He's rather like one of these diesel engines that are now appearing all over our railways - most unappealing, but, I am told, efficient. Well, I suppose we shall have to learn to live with such things - and such people. I think you were trying to tell him something, weren't you, Vicar?

Inspector Slack: I thought it was looking to good to be true. I should have known better. As soon as I saw that nice little grey-haired cobra sliding about I should have known better...
Doctor: Mmm?
Inspector Slack: The Marple woman. Sticks to this sort of business like chewing gum to the cat.

Miss Marple: (to Griselda) Oh, my dear, do you think you should - in your condition?
Griselda: I've always suspected you of keeping a broomstick under the stairs, Miss Marple, and now I know.
Revd. Clement: Griselda!
Griselda: Yes, Len darling?
Revd. Clement: What - I mean - condition?!!
Griselda: A little Clement is forecast.
Revd. Clement: Oh, I say!
Griselda: Yes.
Revd. Clement: Oh, I say!!

Episode Goofs

Although the period detail is generally fascinating, there are a some musical mistakes: the church organist would certainly not have played Albinoni's Adagio at Matins.

This episode of Miss Marple was set in 1954; thus the modern stickers which Miss Marple is selling in aid of the Church Restoration Fund are anachronistic. In the mid fifties modern stickers took the form of a piece of cardboard which was attached to the doner's lapel with a pin.
