Rita, an overworked wife and mother is in the middle of a full blown identity crisis. After a meltdown with her husband, Jay, Rita’s antidote is to carve out a couple hours a week for herself. In her first endeavor, she entices her postal carrier, Patty, and unemployed neighbor, Owen, to join her in her garage for weekly jam sessions.
Rita misses a big moment at Shannon’s karate class because of band practice. Rita and Jay try to cover, but their teen daughter Hallie discovers Rita missed it. While Rita explains to Hallie why it was appropriate to tell a white lie, Shannon overhears the conversation and is heartbroken. Riddled with guilt, Rita buys Shannon a dog. Meanwhile, Hallie’s boyfriend Kip continues to play drums in Rita’s band even though Hallie forbids him.
Trying to help nudge Patty’s new relationship with the UPS guy along, Rita ends up complicating it instead. Meanwhile, Kip and Hallie’s plans to get tattoos doesn’t go over well with Rita and Jay.
When her guitar string breaks, Rita and Patty end up at a guitar shop where they meet two young musicians who invite them to watch their band play. Rita comes home from the concert feeling frisky, but when Jay finds out she was hangin’ with a "couple of young studs," he feels a bit threatened.
Tired of her daily contributions to the household going unnoticed, Rita gets upset when her girls compliment Jay on the surprise dinner he makes for everyone. Their bickering comes to end when they think Hallie is missing and assume that she has snuck out to a concert.

Rita and Jay’s plan to teach Hallie the value of money backfires when she gets a job. With her newfound freedom, Hallie declares she is no longer interested in attending college. Jay and Rita bill Hallie for food and money she has borrowed in the past, but Hallie gets promoted and receives a raise.
Rita reveals to Jay’s poker buddies that he cried at the end of "Charlotte's Web.” Jay becomes the butt of jokes so Rita confronts his pals, making the problem worse. Jay has the last laugh when his boss is impressed by his sensitivity and hands Jay a big new account. Meanwhile, Shannon asks Hallie and Kip to be in a short film project for school about a princess and prince who live happily ever after.
When Hallie becomes increasingly withdrawn, Rita learns that she is being pressured by her friends to have sex. Relieved that Hallie and Kip aren’t having sex, Rita advises Hallie to wait until she is ready. When Rita shares the details of their mother-daughter talk with Jay, Hallie feels betrayed. Disappointed that Hallie never told him about her friends, Kip reassures Hallie that he’s okay with waiting. Kip reminds Hallie how cool her parents are to be so concerned and reveals a secret about his own parents. Meanwhile, Shannon asks Jay to participate in her school’s Career Day.
When Jay asks Rita to stop volunteering herself for so many things, Rita instead volunteers Jay for a school committee. Initially Jay is miffed but later discovers the committee is a cover for dads to kick back, watch sports and eat popcorn. When Rita is called to report for jury duty, she is thrilled to find that it’s a peaceful break in her day and can kick back and read a novel while waiting. When Rita is released from jury duty, she tells Jay she still has to report. When they both realize they've been dishonest with each other, they promise to make room for more free time in their lives. Meanwhile, Hallie and Kip decide to become vegetarians, but learn it’s not so easy.
The band finally books a real gig, but Owen's wife Audrey forbids him from playing in the band because she feels it distracts him from his job hunt. When Rita and Patty confront Audrey, she reveals how much pressure she's under as the sole breadwinner. The ladies commiserate and convince Audrey to let Owen play in the band. The next day, Owen shows up for practice and tells them Audrey kicked him out. Feeling responsible, Rita lets Owen stay at her house where Owen and Audrey see a whole new side to Rita and Jay.
When Rita and Patty suspect Kip is cheating on Hallie, they learn that Kip is actually cheating on Rita's band with a younger band. When Rita and Patty spy on the younger band, they are awestruck by their original songs. Kip admits he was just filling in while the other band's drummer was out of town. Rita attempts to write some original music for the band but finds it’s not so easy…until Jay shares some old letters Rita once wrote to him.
Patty comes to the rescue when a bad cold leaves Rita barely able to get out of bed. While running the household, Patty purchases Shannon her first training bra and helps her practice for her school musical. Furious, Rita becomes increasingly jealous of Patty and thinks she is losing Shannon to her. Meanwhile, Jay and Kip bond over the Guitar Hero video game, but their new 'relationship? becomes a little too competitive.
Rita is surprised when her old friend Cindy surfaces after finding Rita through a Facebook page Kip creates for the band. Cindy was the keyboardist in their Bangles cover band, and Rita blames her for breaking them up. Cindy is also a married mother who has supposedly been living the ?good life? nearby in Ann Arbor, but she reveals to Rita how unfulfilled she's felt ever since she left their band. Patty encourages Rita to make amends, so Rita invites Cindy to sit in with the band for a couple songs. As Cindy and Rita re-connect, both Patty and Jay begin to feel neglected. Ultimately, Cindy disappears again proving to Rita that she hasn't changed.
Jay is furious when he catches Hallie sneaking back into the house after having crashed a college party. He grounds her for a whole month, which includes no Kip, no cell, no computer, no TV or car privileges. Unfortunately, Rita and Jay suffer more than Hallie does as they struggle with sticking to their own grounding rules. To Rita's surprise, Hallie claims shes enjoying being "off the grid" and is eager to serve the full month. Jay will not be had so he revises the punishment and un-grounds Hallie. Meanwhile, Shannon guilts Rita and Jay into throwing their dog Yoda an elaborate birthday party. Throughout, Patty tries to convince Rita to let her hunky new personal trainer play some part in the band.
After discovering that Jay's aunt Mavis dislikes Rita, she goes out of her way to make her change her feelings about her.
Rita's band is invited to perform at a company event by Jay's new client. However, an exuberant Jay begins to offer way too much advice. Meanwhile, Shannon devises a scheme to get Hallie to do some chores around the house.
Rita tries to best a woman at a fund raising event who is the mother of a bully who has been socially picking on Shannon. Meanwhile, Hallie's new used car has Jay reminiscing about days gone past.
Both Jay and Rita make plans for a Valentines celebration having feared their relationship has lost it's spark.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed at home and work, Rita leaves the band. But Jay and the girls notice that she is not herself without music and work on getting her back on her feet.
A son of Patty pays a visit from college and persuades Hallie to continue on with her studies after graduating. Elsewhere, Peter and Rita's audition is a disaster.
Rita and Jay quickly become good friends with the parents of Shannon's classmate, Brianna, until Shannon and Brianna have an argument.
