TV-am was launched on February 1, 1983 and was ITV's first breakfast show. The show was made up of various different segments including Daybreak and Good Morning Britain, Frost On Sunday, After Nine and Even on Sunday. The popular children's segment The Wide Awake Club was broadcast at weekends between 1984 and 1989.

The series featured a mixture of celebrity guests, news and competitions.

Presenters of the show included Chris Tarrant, Anneka Rice, Richard Keys, Kathy Tayler, Nick Owen, Anne Diamond, Jayne Irving, Mike Morris, David Frost, Lorraine Kelly and Anna Ford.
