Episode Quotes

Kat: (talking about the yearbook photos she took) It looks like one of those herpes commercials where everyone is so happy! Despite the fact they have herpes.

Bianca: (to Kat) I need your help!
Kat: First step is admitting you have a problem. Second step is making you a brunette again!

Walter: Why don't you try a car wash, I remember the summer before sophomore year...
Kat: Something really boring happened. Awesome story Dad.
Bianca: A car wash? I love it, thanks Daddy (kisses his cheek)
Kat: Great idea Dad, half naked Cheerleaders, wet and soapy, standing on a street asking for money.
Walter: No car wash!

Bianca: (to the WSO delivery girl) Mail me to another family.
WSO Girl: OK, but first here's your Dad's package.
Bianca: I don't wanna think about my dad's package.

Bianca: (to Kat after she took a picture) Use that last one I had pouty lips with just a hint of tease!
Kat: Ohhh to bad, I think I saw a glare from your Devil horns, Beelzebub.
Bianca: Ok I don't know what that means but I'm offended.

Bianca: (about what will happen if she doesn't get a flower) I'll just go home sick and never come back.

Mandella: That was awesome, it's like your mouth knows Kung-fu!

Walter: You girls are late where were you?
Bianca: We were having sex with the soccer team. It took longer than expected.

Chastity: (about Bianca's fundraiser) Okay, but no bake sale. The last thing this school needs is more fat people.

Bianca: (about Chastity) Kat was right. For a popular girl, she is a teenage Long Duk Dong.
Cameron: I'm sorry, who?
Bianca: The dictator of North Korea. (Cameron's looks confused) It's OK I didn't know either.

Cultural References

The episode (I Want You to Want Me) name is a reference to the 1977 Cheap Trick song of the same name. Several cover versions have been recorded including one by Letters to Cleo from the original 10 Things I Hate About You and one by the L.A. based indie band, KSM, which serves as the show's theme song.

Bianca: I thought I'd learn the routine because, god forbid, someone gets sick, or hurt or pregnant. Thank alot Juno!

Referring to the masterpiece 2007 film starring Ellen Page, featuring a pregnant teen as the lead character. The movie depicts the struggle that Juno (Page) has deciding what she wants to do with it, abortion or adoption. The movie also starred Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Allison Janney and Michael Cera.

Bianca: She is a teenage Long Duk Dong

Bianca was trying to refer to the psychotic ruler of North Korea or but completely missed and referred to the fictional character from the 1984 John Hughes film, Sixteen Candles. Dong (in the movie) was a wacky foreign exchange student that came to stay with Molly Ringwald's family for a weekend.

Analysis

Walter still wears his wedding ring!

This is one of those forgotten before it even happened sub plots that virtually no reviewer will bother to mention (or notice). But it drew my attention after watching the episode for a second time and seeing how subtly and masterfully it was performed by Larry Miller. Showcasing the sub plot in a unique way that gives us some insight into the shows most charming character, Dr. Walter.

The most obvious conclusion to draw is that Walter still misses his late wife deeply and may not be quite ready to move on and begin dating again. By still wearing his wedding ring, even after having moved his family away from their home in Ohio, it clearly shows that Walter and the late Mrs. Stratford were deeply in love.

It was in the end a very endearing moment that presents another side to the paranoid Dad that Walter was portrayed as in the movie (not letting Bianca date until Kat does). Although that seems to have been down played in the series by writer Carter Covington and Director Gil Junger in the first two episodes. Which to me is what a series should be, a fleshing out of the character so as to expand the original story into something more long-lasting and with this simple sub plot that's exactly what's happening.
