Superman was a baby when his Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara sent him hurtling to Earth in a rocketship. The rocketship crashed landed in a field where Eben and Sarah Kent found the baby in the wreckage. They named him Clark and raised him as their son. When Clark became a young man, his adoptive mother sent him into the world to use his powers to do good. Clark became a reporter with The Metropolis Daily Planet and fought crime as Superman. Being a newsman permitted Clark/Superman to keep close tabs on criminals. Clark often posed as a bumbling young man in order to deflect any suspicions his co-workers had about his true identity. Kryptonite, a metal from Superman's home planet Krypton, is the only thing that can weaken or kill him.

Lois Lane is a reporter with the Daily Planet. She likes a good news story and often shares the danger of finding such stories with co-worker Jimmy Olsen. Lois suspects Clark Kent is Superman and waits for an opportunity to confirm her suspicions. Lois is a single, apartment-dwelling, professional woman. In one episode, she returns to her home town.

Jimmy Olsen is a cub reporter with the Daily Planet. He is boyish in his tastes and sense of humor. Jimmy and Lois Lane frequently investigate news leads together and are often comrades in dangerous adventures. Though Jimmy is regarded as inexperienced and naive by his co-workers, he sometimes exhibits mature astuteness and insight.

Perry White is the publisher and editor of the Daily Planet. White can be gruff and impatient with his reporters but he can be generous and understanding as well. White is sometimes a participant in the dangerous escapades of Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane. He is brave in such situations and treats thugs with lofty contempt and scorn.

Inspector Bill Henderson is a member of the Metropolis Police Department. Clark and other members of the Daily Planet rely upon Henderson's expertise in police procedures and crime detection. Henderson is an intelligent man but Superman often beats him to the punch in solving difficult cases and apprehending dangerous criminals. Henderson is a widower with a teenage son named Ray.
