Recap

A police helicopter crashes when a faulty rotor supplied by Powers-Innis Aeronautics fails, killing five. Henry Innis sees a news report and implores his partner Jarrett Powers to test the remaining surplus parts they have been selling. Powers, not wanting to blow a pending deal to sell the company, arranges for Innis to meet with mobster Ed Scanlin, whose connections got the company a big loan. As a precaution, Innis mails out a computer disc containing incriminating evidence. He and Scanlin meet at Club Dionysius that night, where Scanlin murders Innis.
Walter is at home with video game agent Norman, who wants him to create a video game from a soap opera called "Abilene." Automan arrives to have adjustments made to his data base, and when Capt. Boyd summons Walter to the office, he mistakenly watches the "Abilene" tape, thinking it was meant for him.
Walter analyzes Innis' appointment book, searching for clues into his murder. Scanlin calls Powers to report Innis1 death. They need the disc to prevent any problems with the sale of the company, for Powers owes Scanlin's cronies a huge sum of money. Automan figures out the last entry in Innis1 book, "C.D. 2000", and Walter leaves for Club Dionysius. Automan impulsively takes off after him in the Autocar. At the club, Walter overhears Innis’ daughter Rachel inquiring about her father and learns of the connection with Scanlin. He attempts to gain her trust. She meets Automan and the two fall for each other. She joins them in an effort to clear her father.
At headquarters, Walter runs a computer profile on Scanlin. Jack goes to Powers’ house to interrogate him about Scanlin's involvement in his company. He gets nowhere. Powers frantically calls Scanlin when Jack leaves, only to be reminded that his life is in danger if the company is not sold and the money not repaid.
At Walter's apartment, Automan is so engrossed in soap operas he ignores Walter's calls. He thinks he's in love with Rachel. Walter reprimands him and orders him to get back to work on the Innis investigation. After Walter leaves, Rachel arrives and they hatch a plot wherein Automan will accompany Rachel to the party with respective buyers Mr. and Mrs. Behrens posing as a wealthy Texan, Mr. Trospers. He leaves Walter a message on the computer, but before Walter receives it, he is waylaid by muggers.
At the party, Automan plays Trospers to the hilt. Walter arrives with a bandaged face, to be introduced as Trospers’ trusty accountant. Automan chases the Behrens off by raising the bid on the company and insulting the wife. Scanlin is suspicious of Trospers, but Powers takes him up on the deal. Lt. Jack Curtis arrives to report that another chopper crash has been traced to parts sold by Powers' company. Rachel lures Automan off; she suspects her father mailed the disc to his beach house, and they leave Walter a note and take off. Scanlin observes and follows. Automan loses Scanlin in the Autocar, but he calls Powers, who deduces their destination from where Scanlin got lost.
The disc has indeed been mailed to the beach house. Automan enters it into the computer and they find the incriminating info. Settling by the fire to wait for Walter, a love scene develops. Walter arrives just as Automan cuts the romance short, realizing a hologram can never love a human. Scanlin enters shortly, with a gun and henchmen. Automan cleverly sends a distress signal to Jack via Cursor through the computer modem, and then he and Walter attack the mobsters. Scanlin runs with Rachel as a hostage. Automan and Walter track him down with the Autochopper. The party celebrating the bust finds Walter at work creating the "Abilene" video game.
