Recap

It's late night at the Police armory and rogue cops Sam Lymon, Dean Springer and Jeff Coe are stealing rifles and ammunition. When honest cop Frank Cooney gets the drop on them, Lymon dives for a rifle and kills him. Spring then chloroforms Coe and Lymon, setting up Cooney as the fall guy.
Next day, Lt. Jack Curtis grills Lymon and Coe, who blame Cooney. The case is turned over to Internal Affairs Lt. Malcolm Whittaker. Walter is convinced his police academy classmate Cooney has been framed — he has evidence suggesting Cooney was conducting his own investigation into the possible theft at the armory. Jack warns him to give the evidence, a computer printout Walter supplied to his friend, to Whittaker or risk charges of withholding evidence. Walter tells Automan of his predicament, and they decide to investigate the investigators.
They trail Lymon and Coe to the High Spirits Club, featuring resident medium Madame Russo. Inside, they spot Lymon and Coe signaling Rollie Dumont, owner of the club. Automan slips backstage to recharge his power, hooking up to Madame Russo's special effects machine and blowing the circuits. She sees the problem and prepares to go on anyway. Walter slips off to eavesdrop at Rollie's office door, overhearing Lyman and Coe demand the payoff for the armory job. Suddenly Springer jumps Walter and brings him into the office.
Automan rescues Walter, claiming he is the assistant special effects man. Rollie goes to check the story out. Madame Russo begins her show and Automan and Cursor provide dazzling effects. Rollie is sold and releases Walter. He and Automan exit the club to find Lymon and Coe pulling out. Automan pursues them as Walter confronts Lt. Whittaker, who has just driven up and refuses to say why he's there. Inside, though, he and Rollie confer about the nosy young cop.
The next day Walter is suspended for withholding the printout evidence from Whittaker. Walter continues computer research into the case anyway, hitting a dead end until Automan arrives to reveal a connection between Whittaker and Lymon and Coe -- he had burglary charges against them dropped. Walter leaves to take the new evidence to Capt. Boyd, but Automan precedes him in the guise of Federal Agent Mann, psychic investigator. Automan leaves with Boyd and Jack to attend Whittaker's tennis fund raiser for his campaign for D.A. Walter goes home, discouraged over being totally excluded from the case, and is mugged by Lymon and Coe.
At the party, Whittaker challenges Automan to a tennis match with $25,000 riding on the outcome. Automan uses his electronic magic to blank the crooked cop, and confronts Whittaker with the evidence of his connection to Lymon and Coe. Whittaker claims Cooney set them up, but Walter arrives to accuse them of his beating. Inside the country club, Whittaker successfully throws blame on Walter by claiming Rollie is working with him and his connection to Lymon and Coe merely a ruse. He threatens Walter with criminal charges.
Automan has a plan to trap Whittaker. He obtains a video image of Cooney from an old videotape and stores it in his memory. Walter confronts Lymon and Coe, claiming Whittaker is reopening the investigation into their past burglaries. He and Automan follow Lymon and Coe to the High Spirits Club, with Lt. Curtis as backup. Whittaker joins Lymon and Coe, who relay Walter's accusation. He wins back their confidence by promising a payoff.
Madame Russo takes the stage, with Automan and Cursor providing effects. Automan pulls his trick — a hologram of Frank Cooney. The "ghost" points out his murderers and Coe breaks, blaming Lymon and Whittaker, who run for the exits. A chase ensues, in which Lymon wounds Coe, Walter and Automan bag Whittaker and Rollie, Curtis corrals Springer, and Walter and Automan team to run Lymon off the road in the Autochopper. Walter vindicates his friend and is reinstated on the force with a commendation.
