Sgt. James Bergerac was a divorced, recovering alcoholic who liked to work alone. It was the dedication to his job, coupled with his drink problem that cost him his marriage and later caused friction with several of his girlfriends. Despite his troubled personal life, Bergerac was an excellent Detective with a 99% clear up rate, he single handedly solved every crime ever committed on this small island, with one exception, Phillipa Vale.
Bergerac aired on BBC from 1981 - 1991, it reached nearly 90 episodes, over 9 series, including a number of Christmas specials. It was extremely popular at its peak and pulled in an average 10 milliion viewers. It was actually set on the Channel Island of Jersey and filmed there as well.

Receiving a letter from Danielle, his girlfriend in France, ending their relationship and angry that Charlie knew and didn't tell him, Jim is back on the bottle. Charlie decides to keep Jim busy and hires him to accompany him to Bath as a "minder" of a priceless painting he has received as payment of a debt. In Bath, Jim begins an affair with Cressida Draper, the wife of Charlie's associate Rupert, unaware that she is snaring him as part of a greater plot which will see him framed for the murder of a man yet to be killed...
