Stuck in afternoon detention due to a fluke, Tommy and Merton are forced to watch a boring educational film on good behavior. However, the film's bully, Butch, finds a way out into the real world, looking to find a girl from the real world to bring back to the film with him as his girlfriend. And, sure enough, he sets his sights on Stacey Hanson. When Butch begins to execute his plot to make Stacey his, Tommy and Merton must find a way to put Butch back into the film and save Stacey, or else she'll be trapped in the film, for eternity...

Episode Quotes |

(Merton sees Tommy approaching as he's being bullied by Tim and Travis)
Merton: Um, can I interest you guys in some life insurance? 'Cuz you're gonna need it in about two seconds! | (Merton has just recieved detention. Hugo sniffs the air)
Hugo: Is that Wacky Fruit Yummy Bubble?
(Tommy swallows his gum)
Hugo: I'm cracking down on gum-chewers, you've got detention too! | Hugo: When I was growing up, we learned right from wrong the old-fashioned way: through outdated instructional films. | Butch: You got moxie, kiddo. It's too bad you're not a couple years older.
Becky: Whatever, Fonzie. | (Tommy and Merton see Butch talking to Stacey)
Tommy: Who is that? And what's with the oil spill in his hair? | Tommy: (voiceover) Merton tried to explain to me how it was possible for Butch to jump out of the movie screen and into reality. I didn't understand a word of it. But then again, neither did he.
(Merton begins and continues to scribble things on a chalkboard)
Merton: OK, now if we can maintain a constant level of emulsion, you know, and there would be a, uh, celluloid, and protons would converge, in a, in a... Diverge! Uh, I don't know where I am, right now. I-I-I'm lost... | Butch: Hey, I'll go two against one, but I-I ain't fightin' no bear!
Merton: Oh, he's not a bear! He's a pure-blooded, all-American werewolf! | Merton: We're about to face a realm-hopping, time-traveling thug! It's a fairly stressful situation! See that vein? It's not supposed to pop out like that! | Tommy: Hey... Hey, what if we, I dunno, like, checked the film for clues, or something like that?
Merton: Yeah, good idea, Columbo! Let's (sarcastically deep voice) check the film for clues!
(beat)
Actually, that's not such a bad idea. | Merton: You know, we've never really talked about this, but your mom is kinda-
Tommy: The next word that comes out of your mouth had better be "talented". |

Episode Title
The title is a play on the phrase, "when push comes to shove". | Merton: This is just like The Purple Rose of Cairo, Woody Allen's Oscar-nominated tale of longing and betrayal.
The Purple Rose of Cairo, written and directed by Woody Allen, was indeed Oscar-nominated, and followed a story set in New Jersey during the 1930s, in which a movie character found a way into the real world. It was released in 1985. The plot of this episode greatly mirrors this film as well. |
