Episode Notes

This is the only episode of the series in which Paul Darrow (Kerr Avon) does not appear.

Besides Gareth Thomas (Blake) and Michael Keating (Vila), Mike Mungarvan (Prisoner) is the only other actor to appear in both the first ("The Way Back") and last ("Blake") episodes of the series.

This episode features only three members of the regular cast, less than any subsequent episode of the series: Gareth Thomas (Blake), Michael Keating (Vila) and Sally Knyvette (Jenna).

This is the only episode in which Blake's late brother and sister are mentioned.

Ven Glynd (Robert James) would later appear in the Series Two episode "Voice from the Past", in which he was played by Richard Bebb. With the exception of Blake (Gareth Thomas), Vila (Michael Keating) and Jenna (Sally Knyvette), Glynd is the only character from the first episode to appear in a subsequent one.

Blake's 7 replaced the police drama Softly Softly, which had ended its ten year run on December 13, 1976, in the BBC schedule. This meant that it inherited that series' budget, limiting the extent and the effectiveness of the visual effects which could be used. The first series was produced at a total cost of £750,000.

Episode Quotes

Blake: Since you were so insistent, I've done without food and drink for thirty-six hours.
Ravella: How do you feel?
Blake: Hungry and thirsty.

Vila: (to Blake) Take it easy! I hate personal violence, especially when I'm the person!

Vila: Murderers, liars, cheats...smugglers.
Jenna: Thieves...
Vila: And they're the nice people.

Vila: I steal things. Compulsive, I'm afraid. I've had my head adjusted by some of the best in the business, but it just won't stay adjusted.

Vila: We're all victims of a miscarriage of justice.

Vila: Friends in high places? Can you put in a word for me?
Blake: I'll try to think of one.
