The crew reluctantly decides to destroy their base, as they must assume Zukan has given up its location to the Federation. They must also now find a new figurehead to lead their resistance struggle against the Federation, now that their earlier plans for a figurehead have failed. Avon tells the team that thinks he knows where he thinks Blake has been hiding, and they should seek him out as their new rebel leader. The crew is dismayed that Avon has kept the information of Blake’s possible location a secret from them but agrees to seek him out.

It seems Blake is working as a bounty hunter on a once lawless planet now transitioning to a law biding society. However, Scorpio is shot down by the planet’s planetary defenses. Everyone but Tarrant is able to teleport off the ship before it crashes, leaving Tarrant barely alive and the crew scattered across the surface.

Now they find Blake is chasing them all down for the bounty on their heads. But does Blake really have a secret agenda behind his current professional persona as a bounty hunter?

Episode Notes

Besides Gareth Thomas (Blake) and Michael Keating (Vila), Mike Mungarvan (Rebel Technician / Federation Trooper) is the only other actor to appear in both the first ("The Way Back") and last ("Blake") episodes of the series.

Janet Lee Price (Klyn) is the real life wife of Paul Darrow (Avon).

The filming of this episode and consequently of Blake's 7 itself finished on November 7, 1981.

Originally, Blake's dying words were to have been "Oh Avon, I didn't take any of them on trust...except you...You are my...only friend." However, it was felt that Blake still having the capacity of speech while in the grips of so violent a death would be stretching the audience's credulity.

Episode Quotes

Vila: (referring to the Xenon base) I never liked that place anyway.
Soolin: Especially since the wine ran out.
Dayna: I still don't think Zukan told the Federation.
Vila: About the wine?

Avon: Figureheads aren't too difficult to come by. Any idiot can be one.
Dayna: On your feet, Vila. This could be your big moment.
Avon: Any idiot within reason, that is.

Vila: We know what we've got planned. Running away is what we've got planned.
Dayna: A strategic withdrawal is what we've got planned.
Vila: There's a difference?
Tarrant: Oh yes. A strategic withdrawal is running away, but with dignity.
Vila: So lay in a course and let's get the dignified hell out of here.

Vila: Does that mean safer?
Avon: In the end, winning is the only safety.
Vila: It doesn't mean safer. Didn't think it would.

Avon: Idealism is a wonderful thing. All you really need is someone rational to put it to proper use.
Dayna: Someone like you?

Dayna: (referring to Servalan) She had no reason to lie.
Avon: She doesn't need one. It comes quite naturally to her, like breathing.

Avon: I would have left Blake where he was and said nothing if things had gone according to plan.
Tarrant: I must try and work that into the conversation when we meet him.

Slave: I don't wish to interrupt, Master.
Orac: Then kindly don't!
Slave: I wasn't talking to you!
Orac: You were attempting to over-ride a superior system! Be silent!

Vila: There must be something we can do!
Avon: I'll accept suggestions!
Vila: How does "abandon ship" grab you?

Avon: Do you want to wait around until we hit something soft?

Slave: The ground is very close, sir!
Tarrant: I KNOW THAT!

Blake: It's getting so you can't make a dishonest living on this planet anymore.

Soolin: Surely you're not afraid of the dark.
Vila: Only when it's unilluminated.

Soolin: If you want to survive on this planet, you have to assume that everyone's out to get you!
Vila: I always assume that, wherever I go.
Soolin: The difference is, on Gauda Prime, you'll be right.

Avon: The fire was stupid. Leaving Vila on guard was suicidal. What's the matter, is staying alive too complicated for you?

Vila: What hit me?
Dayna: Don't worry, Vila. They went for your least vulnerable spot.
Vila: Oh, my head!
Dayna: Exactly.

Soolin: I really could be quite annoyed if I thought we'd been the bait in a trap you'd laid, Avon!

Tarrant: What on Earth happened to you?
Blake: Most of it wasn't on Earth, Tarrant.

Tarrant: (referring to Blake) Is it him?
Vila: It's him.

Avon: Is it true?
Blake: Avon, it's me.
Avon: STAND STILL! Is it true? Have you betrayed us? Have you betrayed me?
