During 1988 Richard Grieco set young hearts throbbing in Fox's "21 Jump Street" as the handsome, brooding, rebel cop Dennis Booker.
By September 1989, Grieco was spun off into "Booker," which some people forecast as the only hit of the television season. That the show was on the so-called fourth network spoke to Grieco's appeal and to the changing face of television.
Booker's rebellious in the sense that he doesn't do things by the book. He's unorthodox, but he's honest.
The producers brought Richard Grieco onto '21 Jump Street' to be an antagonist, then killed him off after six shows. The audience liked this character and the producers decided to keep him on.
"Booker" got more into his private life on the new show. We learned he has a mother, but they didn't get along. He's a loner. He didn't even have a girlfriend. They brought someone on but it didn't last long. In the final episode of "21 Jump Street" in the season 1987-88, Booker arrested Tom Hanson (played by Johnny Depp) on a charge of murder. The story picked up in the first episode of "21 Jump Street" in September 1988. Dennis Booker got Johnny out on a 48-hour pass and both retraced the steps of what happened. And what happened is Booker uncovered a lot of corruption in the city government. Booker offended a lot of people in high places and had to leave the police force and become a private detective."
"Booker" took over the Sunday night time slot of "21 Jump Street" — which jumped to Monday to open a new night of programming for Fox. Booker was also filmed in Vancouver where Steven Williams, Peter DeLuise and other stars of "Jump Street" occasionally paid a visit to the new show.
