Horse of Yet Another Color - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
An Apache party approaches Sweetwater. Meanwhile, two men engage in a horse race and the townspeople bet on them. Maverick covers the bets of a man named Kelly and then goes inside and beats the man at poker. Kelly pays with a white horse, Liberty.

Delwood Crestmore prepares to open his new investment and trading office in Sweetwater. His associate, Jessica Denard, insists that Delwood will need her at his side. However, Delwood tells her to enjoy Sweetwater’s social life while he and his assistant, Phineas Swackmyer, take care of business. Tom arrives and Delwood is glad to see the man he’s been exchanging telegrams with. Delwood wants to work with Tom and establish the first in a series of ice houses, and wants Tom for his local experience. Jessica is clearly interested in Tom, while Tom offers to show them the Red Ox. Delwood asks about Tom’s partner, and Tom says that his partner is silent and spends most of his time in Colorado.

Back at the Red Ox, Tom tells Jack to prepare the bar for a tour. Jack warns him that Bret is looking for him and is out back. When Tom goes out, Bret shows him his new horse. He plans to store Liberty at the livery, but Tom lies and says that Kelly might try to steal it. Bret agrees and takes Liberty out to the Lazy Ace, just as Tom planned.

Congressman Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and his assistant, Joe Ferris, ride into Sweetwater. Roosevelt is sure that Geronimo and his party are nearby, and Ferris warns that they need to find the stolen Liberty horse as soon as possible. Ferris goes to get rooms for them at the hotel while Roosevelt makes inquiries at the Red Ox.

Bret talks to Cy and soon realizes that nobody has ever stolen a horse from the livery. The gambler has Cy take Liberty out to the ranch while he checks on Tom. Roosevelt spots him and realizes who he is, while Geronimo’s assistant Running Wolf watches them both.

Mary Lou catches up to Tom and reminds him that he promised to help her get her equipment up to Cabo Canyon to take photos of the sunset. Jessica comes by and asks for a few minutes of his time, while a jealous Mary Lou looks on. She storms off in a huff.

In the Red Ox, Roosevelt asks Jack for information as Mary Lou comes to the bar. She complains that Tom is chasing a woman instead and plans to go out to the canyon on her own. As she walks off, Roosevelt figures that she’s exactly who he’s been looking for. Meanwhile, Tom and Jessica discuss business and she tells him that she likes Tom and offers her help to deal with Delwood. Jessica admits that she’s just decoration to Delwood, and he prefers his polo horses to her. She wants 3% of Tom’s profits, and threatens to ruin the deal for him if he doesn’t accept her deal. Tom agrees to think about it and Jessica suggests that it could be the start of a very interesting relationship.

Bret has Rodney check on Tom’s movements and report to him. He tells Rodney to find out who Jessica is and book him a room at the hotel so he can stay close to Tom.

That night, Geronimo and his people wait outside the town.

Roosevelt comes to see Mary Lou and explains that Liberty was entrusted to Kelly, but the man has disappeared with the horse. The congressman is impressed with Mary Lou’s candor and wants to use her local experience to find Liberty. He tells her who he is and explains that the President sent Roosevelt to complete a sensitive with the Indians. The President sent one of his horses at Roosevelt’s suggestion, and they have two days to find it before the treaty ceremony. He offers Mary Lou an exclusive in return for her help and she agrees.

Delwood, Jessica, and Swackmyer inspect the Red Ox, which Tom plans to put up as collateral for his share of the ice house. Swackmyer inadvertently mentions a Clause 29 and Tom wants to hear more. The accountant explains that if Tom puts up $50,000 in cash, Tom is entitled to an immediate cash return and the right to sell out for a profit in six months. Delwood only will make the agreement with someone he knows, and suggests that they could do it in the future. Tom agrees and goes to get the books. Delwood asks about Tom’s partner, and Tom says that he won’t be a problem. He finds Bret waiting for him in the office, eager to meet his new partners. He doesn’t believe Tom’s excuse and plans to talk to Delwood. Tom stops him and reluctantly explains that he’s found a way to pay off the mortgage. He admits that Delwood would get nervous if he knew Bret was involved. Bret agrees to keep a low profile but insists on checking the paperwork.

Later, the partners go over the paperwork and Bret says that they could make a fortune using Clause 29. He offers to mortgage the Lazy Ace to make up the difference and then clear $200,000 in six months. However, Tom notes that Delwood won’t extend Clause 29 to anyone except close friends. Bret suggests that they give Delwood a gift and then refuse to accept anything except Clause 29. When Tom wonders what gift to get Delwood and mentions his interest in horses, Bret figures that they give the investor Liberty. Bret rushes off to the bank to make the mortgage and tells Tom to get the horse.

Mary Lou barges into Roosevelt’s room and finds him bathing in a portable rubber tub. She tells him that she’s found Liberty at the Lazy Ace and offers to get Sheriff Dowd involved to deal with Bret as necessary. Roosevelt agrees and they prepare to ride out.

Bret has Cy and Rodney take Liberty back to Sweetwater, and then pays Tom $50,000 to accept Delwood’s offer. He also has his partner sign a rider confirming that the money can only be spent for the deal. Roosevelt and his party ride up and demand the horse. Roosevelt insists that he has to recover the horse but Bret figures that Tom has set the whole thing up as a con to make his own deal with Delwood. Bret plays it straight and says he doesn’t know where Liberty is and wouldn’t turn it over if they did. Roosevelt has Mitch arrest both of them.

Cy and Rodney give Delwood the horse. After they leave, he wonders if Bret and Tom suspect things, but Phineas confirms that Bret mortgaged the Lazy Ace and couldn’t resist Clause 29. Jessica comes over and learns what is happening, while Running Wolf secretly watches them.

Rodney tries to explain to a confused Cy what is going on. The foreman gives up in frustration.

Running Wolf rides out to report to Geronimo.

In jail, Bret warns Tom that their deal will fall through if they give back the horse. Tom figures he can use the $50,000 check to pay off the mortgage and ignore the rider. Bret warns him that he’s in over his head, but Tom figures that by the time Bret gets out, there’ll be nothing he can do. Jessica comes to visit Tom and Bret realizes that she’s Dolly O’Hare, a con woman.

When Delwood learns that Tom and Bret are in jail because of the horse, the investor wonders if they can give it back. Phineas warns that there’s no way to return Liberty without raising suspicions, and Delwood complains that he’s been waiting eighteen years to get revenge on Bret for cleaning him out at poker. To get Tom to pay them Bret’s $50,000, they have no choice but to get Tom out of jail.

Dolly explains how she gave up riverboat gambling for bigger stakes. Bret offers her $1,000 to deliver the contract to Elijah, and Tom offers her $5,000 to deliver the $50,000 check. Dolly is eager to take the check, but Bret points out that giving it to her might be a bad idea. Tom agrees and suggests that Dolly talk Delwood into giving back the horse so they can turn it over and get out of jail.

Roosevelt is rehearsing his apology speech to Geronimo when Mary Lou brings him a telegram from the President. The congressman admits that the President wants a progress report and his career is ruined. Mary Lou gives him an inspirational speech and points out that as a politician, he needs to arrange a deal to make sure that Bret and Tom keep their business deal. Inspired, Roosevelt storms off with Mary Lou in tow.

Rodney catches up to Cy at the Red Ox and tells him that Bret is in jail. Before they can go to the jail, Jack comes over and tells them that Running Wolf wants a word with them.

Roosevelt talks to Tom and Bret and offers a compromise. Tom jumps in and offers him Liberty in return for keeping Bret in jail until the next morning. Bret suggests that Jessica is influencing Tom and a jealous Mary Lou agrees. Bret offers to guarantee that he gets Liberty back in time for the signing if Roosevelt gets them all out and backs their play. Roosevelt agrees to the deal. As they leave, Swackmyer sees them come outside.

Dolly is rehearsing her speech to Delwood to get him to give the horse back, and goes to her room to change into something more distracting. Swackmyer arrives and tells Delwood that Tom and Bret have been released thanks to the bribe he paid. Delwood figures they’d better give back the horse before the partners can get into any more trouble and leaves... unaware that Dolly has overheard the same thing.

At the Red Ox, Cy tries to tell Bret that Running Wolf wants to talk to him. Bret ignores him to concentrate on his new plan. Delwood and Swackmyer arrive and Bret hides while Tom introduces Roosevelt as his silent partner, “Chauncy.” While they talk, Cy finally convinces Bret to talk to Running Wolf.

Delwood is surprised that Tom’s partner isn’t who he thought it was. Roosevelt claims to be Tom’s rich partner and offers the $50,000 in cash. Delmore and Swackmyer are eager to agree and Tom goes into his office to get the contracts. Dolly is there and explains that the ice house is a con and Delwood has always wanted to get revenge on Bret. Tom wonders why he should believe her and Dolly asks what she can do to get him to believe her.

Roosevelt calls Tom out and insists that Liberty is his prized possession. Delwood is eager to give Liberty back and sends Swackmyer to get the horse. He discovers that it’s gone and runs back to report the loss. As Roosevelt runs to get the horse, Bret tells him to look behind the church and talk to Running Wolf. The gambler then confronts Delwood and snatches the $50,000 check. Delwood storms off and Tom points out that Bret grabbed the new contract rather than the contract. Bret admits that he told Running Wolf to steal Liberty so that Delwood would panic and the deal would fall through.

Bret runs off to get the check from Delwood, and Dolly comes out to congratulate Tom. Tom kept the $50,000 and plans to use it to pay off the Red Ox. He suggests that there might be something left after the mortgage to pay her for her trouble, and Dolly suggests that they take a brief vacation together. However, Bret returns, grabs the check from Tom, and explains that his partner overplayed his innocence.

At the signing ceremony, Roosevelt turns Liberty over to Geronimo as a gift. Bret apologizes to Dolly, but she figures a few days with Tom in Tucson will make up for it. Meanwhile, a guilty Tom considers helping Mary Lou with her photos, only to learn she has already made plans with Roosevelt. Geronimo accepts the horse but then turns it free
