In St. Louis, a young research assistant named Samantha Dunne comes to see Bret, who is locked up in prison. He’s disappointed to learn that she isn’t from the governor with a pardon from his hanging the next morning. Samantha explains that that she’s with the Mayflower Women’s Historical Society and offers him a chance at freedom in return for his cooperation. Episode Quotes
Bret: Tom, you got a problem?
Tom: Oh, nothing compared to you being back underfoot.
Bret: If I didn't know better, I'd think you were glad to see me.

Bret: Oh, Tom Guthrie, I'd like you to meet Samantha Dunne. She's a...
Samantha Dunne: Former research librarian.
Tom: A librarian?
Bret: It's a long story.
Tom: Oh, it would have to be.

Samantha Dunne: What's your drink, Maverick?
Bret: Rotgut.
Samantha Dunne: Perfect.

Samantha Dunne: Then I was right. There is a game.
Bret: Dunne, there's always a game.

(about Samantha)
Mary Lou: Friend of yours?
Bret: Well, it's hard to tell.

Tom: What is it with you, anyway? Don't you have enough stories where you live? Do you have to keep on looking?
Mary Lou: Maybe I want to be looking. Who knows? Maybe I'll find one I've never heard before.
Tom: Maybe you'll get hurt.
Mary Lou: Then I'll get hurt.

Mary Lou: But, say, how did you end up with this librarian...?
Bret: It's a long, long story.
Mary Lou: It'd have to be.

Cy: Mister, you draw trouble like an outhouse draws flies.
Bret: Well, everybody's gotta have a knack for something.
