Episode Summary

In 1135, Civil War reigns supreme in England between the forces of King Stephen and Empress Matilda. The battle rages in Shrewsbury where King Stephen successfully besieges a castle and orders 94 of the occupants put to the sword. But when the corpses are being prepared for burial it's discovered that there are 95 of them by Brother Cadfael, a monk at a nearby monastery. Cadfael realizes that a murder has been committed and receives the King's permission to investigate.
