Callan and Bishop are at the German border to exchange a KGB agent for two British agents. The exchange takes place, and the two British agents, Mallory and Surtees are to be debriefed.

However, Surtees proves to be a very difficult man who will not co-operate as he says he was blackmailed by British Intelligence to spy for them in the first place. He intends to write his memoirs and have them published. Hunter is extremely worried about the effect that this will have on the Section, and orders Callan to do something about it.

Callan doesn't want to harm Surtees and makes a few enquiries before committing himself. He enlists the aid of Lonely, who is working at Harry's Strip Bar as a lavatory attendant.

Episode Quotes

Lonely: (complaining) It's not only noisy down here, it's dead parky and all. Look, I could get a nice little fire going with these things!
Callan: Look, mate, it's bad enough being cooped up with you for three hours without having you steaming as well.
Lonely: Yeah, well. I'm always inclined to sweat a bit before a job.
Callan: So I've noticed. If you don't take a bath at least take a walk sometimes.

(Hunter is visiting Callan unofficially in his flat)
Hunter: No, David, the award, whatever, would have to be posthumous.
Callan: You don't expect him to drop dead then, just to please you, do you?
Hunter: No. Which is why we're having this private talk.
Callan: You get knotted ... sir!
Hunter: I see - we've become formal again.
Callan: Oh, yeah, too right we have. You get off my back, mate. I'm telling you, you want a chopping done you write out a chit.
Hunter: (smoothly) There's to be no record, no order, nothing official ...
Callan: (angrily) I'm telling you, sir - you want a killing you give an order direct, straight in front of witnesses.
Hunter: You're certain he's not KGB?
Callan: Look, I'm not certain of anything.
Hunter: Either way he's a time bomb. Defuse him before he goes off. Just accept the situation. You won't have to feel guilty about it. Not about anything ... There's a service entrance at the back of Surtee's flat. Use that, Mallory or Cross will be on surveillance and I don't want you seen. Make it look like suicide. And don't forget his notes. (Exiting) I was never here and we never spoke about this.
