One evening while Lonely is moonlighting with the Department's taxi he picks up a fare and is horrified when one of the passengers, a well known gangster, is gunned down after being dropped off at his destination. Lonely becomes a hunted man, wanted by both the police and the underworld as the only witness to the incident.
In fear he turns to Callan who is furious that Lonely has used the taxi, or MCF (mobile communications facility), for commercial gain. However, it is Callan who must get Lonely off the hook and with the help of Meres the gangsters involved in the killing get a lot more than they had bargained for.

Callan: (irritably) What you done?
Lonely: Nothing. Honest!
Callan: Well go on mate, if you've got something to tell me, tell me! I've got the worst bloody cold I've ever had in my life but I can still smell you so let's have a bit of clean air between us - do you mind!
Lonely: Well, it's these gangsters, Mr. Callan.
Callan: Oh yeah.
Lonely: It was me. It's in the paper, Mr. Callan. This bloke - Dollar something.
Callan: Who? Ted Dollar?
Lonely: Yeah, yeah. Him that was shot Saturday.
Callan: What about him?
Lonely: Well, I mean, it says that the Police is anxious to get in touch with the taxi driver - it was on the wireless and all - well, it's me they're after!
Callan: You?
Lonely: I mean, I was the one what drove him to Ealing - 'im and the bird.
Callan: (furiously) You've been out touting for fares again, you stupid little b..... !! | Hunter: (to Callan and Meres) Since when has it been your job to clean up the underworld?
Callan: Oh, that, sir.
Hunter: Yes, that!
Callan: Yeah, well you told me to sort it out - so I sorted it out.
Hunter: I didn't tell you to take the law into your own hands like a couple of gangsters!
Meres: No.
Callan: (grinning) Exactly what we are, sir, isn't it?!
Hunter: (pompous) Our work is essential to the safety of the country ...
Callan: Oh, yeah.
Hunter: We are not hired thugs ...
Callan: No, no - of course we're not, sir - no. We're - uh - civil servants, aren't we, God bless her.
Hunter: (coldly) Lucky for you that the police assume that what happened was simply a case of gangland revenge.
Meres: (innocently) Oh, is that what they assume, sir? |
