Soviet Agent Richmond has defected to the United Kingdom, and a debriefing session is set up at a large house just outside London. The debriefing is conducted by Callan, and it is secretly filmed by Hunter and agent Jarrow.

Richmond insists that he is not a traitor in the sense that he has not gone over to the British - he just wants to get out of the business and wants sanctuary. He offers the same sanctuary to Callan by suggesting that he should do the same by going to the Soviet Union. He says that in the spy business the people who kill you are always your friends.

Richmond makes a bit of trouble by suggesting that Meres is a corrupt double agent, and in the end Meres turns up at the house.

Episode Notes

This episode bears some similarities to the TV series, The Prisoner which starred Patrick McGoohan. It was written by George Markstein who also wrote episodes for The Prisoner. The episode's central theme is that of a spy under observation, what motivates him and so on. Callan is anxious to find out why Richmond resigned which is the central idea behind The Prisoner.

Episode Quotes

Richmond: (fishing) Tell me, that little taxi driver - is he one of your men?
Callan: Not really.
Richmond: You merely use him when convenient?
Callan: In a way.
Richmond: I find it very refreshing, that kind of informality.
Callan: Oh yeah.
Richmond: You see if you were in my shoes, you'd have been brought here in a staff car with darkened windows driven by a cold-faced goon.
Callan: That, I know.
Richmond: There'd be guards at the gates, dogs patrolling the grounds - I take it that we're quite alone here?
Callan: Yes.
Richmond: Absolutely on our own?
Callan: Yes.
Richmond: So that whatever happens it's between us two.
Callan: If you like.
Richmond: I like very much. It appeals to me - it shows imagination.

Richmond: (waking up and getting out of bed) Good morning, gentleman. What a beautiful day!
Jarrow: (secretly monitoring the room with Hunter) Do you want that wiped from the tape, sir?
Hunter: When I want the tape doctored I'll tell you.
Jarrow: Quite so, sir.
