Charlie Jade

Charlie Jade

We are introduced to at least three parallel universes in "Charlie Jade" and the collective name is Multiverse. The Alphaverse, the Betaverse and the Gammaverse. Alphaverse is highly developed technologically, and is ruled by corporations. Betaverse, is our universe and Gammaverse is in comparison a version of paradise. Scientists have found a way to open a gate between them, unknown to the general population of each universe.

Charlie Jade, our hero, is from Alphaverse where he makes a living as a private eye. Although cynical and tough, he has a good life there: a beautiful girlfriend, a way to live without being at the mercy of one of the ruling corporations. A case leads him to a facility, and he witnesses some terrorists blowing it up. He realize that the explosion caused him to end up someplace else, the world he finds himself is eerily similar and yet vastly different from his own, and he needs to find his way home.

Shot on location in South-Africa and is a co-production between Canada and South-Africa, this is probably one of the most intelligent and unique science fiction shows to ever have been created.

Final: 1x20 -- Ouroboros (Aug/20/2005)

Charlie is back in Betaverse - back with Blues. Not thinking they have anything to worry about, since 01 Boxer is now controlling Vexcor, he realizes to his horror that it's not over. He must remember something, something important. He's shifting between universes involontarily - and he must find out his part in all of it. Boxer went ahead with the plans to open the link, despite what he's said before and it leads to Charlie and 01 Boxer having a final show-down. Reena has figured out what the strange box is to be used for. She's as determined as ever to bring Vexcor down, and stop the link, even though it means she must stay in Betaverse, that to her is hell - or die trying. She tells Karl to find the failsafe codes for the facility, which is a ruse so that she can go ahead with her plans.

I've seen over half of the series now, and I think it has become better the deeper you get into the season. At first it seemed slow and it jumped around too often making it difficult to follow. It starts to come together and make more sense in the 2nd half of the season so if you stick it out you will get rewarded. I think the show though was too dark and the characters too cliché like I'm reading a crime detective comic book. Jade seems to have a 'magical' device that reminds me of Doctor Who's sonic screwdriver - does almost everything it needs him to - seemed a bit too far fetched. I think the 7.6 rating is a bit too generous; I give it a 6. Read more
