| We learn quite a great deal about McMurphy's family namely that they are quite miserable with each other.
The mother, father, and brother all seem to be classic examples of the dsyfuctional family.
The brother has never been appreciated by the mother and father. The mother is a caricature of a typical housewife. The father is portrayed as a long time drunk. The only person seeming to be different is the uncle of the family. The uncle himself has lost both hands after fighting in the war.
Initially, McMurphy is very eager about returning home. However, when we finally see her surroundings and reactions it seems that she is already aware of her dsyfunctional family's
history.
It seems that the writers intent then rather then writing about an episode where a main
character "goes home" seems to be more about McMurphy closing a painful chapter
in her life while pursuing her future (back to Vietnam and staying the mlitary permanently).
