Sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, James Barnes had already spent eight years behind bars when he became a practising Muslim.

During Ramadan, he called in homicide detectives, and confessed to a previous murder of a woman.

He broke into her apartment, naked. For hours he hid in her apartment and watched her watching TV and taking a shower. His intention was to rape and kill her. He failed to strangulate her and subsequently killed her with a hammer, then set her bed on fire.

From his youth on, he was an arsonist. He killed the family cats. He committed numerous crimes.

He is repentant, and accepts full responsibility. In conversation, he does not appear a monster at all.
