Flight Lieutenant Simon Carter has been married for only two months to his wife Cathy, a violinist, but is still flying on bombing raids over Germany, much against her wishes and the wishes of his father-in-law.
Eventually he is shot down over Germany and taken prisoner by the Gestapo, along with a German priest who has been seized for hiding Jewish children in his church. The priest manages to get away, but Simon is put into Octenlagerll Prisoner of War Camp after being badly beaten by the Gestapo.
He quickly escapes from here, only to be recaptured by the Gestapo who send him to 'a special prisoner of war camp' in Saxony, Oflag IVC - Colditz - from which there is no escape.
