Lieutenant Richard Roxburgh (Dick) Player is a member of the British navy. Washed ashore in France and wearing civilian clothing after his submarine is hit by a German mine, he is admitted to a French hospital. He quickly escapes from here, but is soon picked up by the Gestapo who pretend that they believe that he is a spy.
Little by little, he tells them that he was brought up in Berlin as a child by his father who was the British Consular to Berlin. When he tells them that he knows a Paul von Eisinger, who was an old friend of his father's, they agree that he is probably telling the truth, but nevertheless he is sent under guard to Berlin to be identified by von Eisinger.
Paul von Eisinger is an anglophile who proposes that Dick Player should be a member of a group who wish Britain to form an alliance with Germany and are desirous of Britain agreeing to an armistice. When Player refuses to have anything to do with such an alliance, he is sent to Colditz where he is met by Simon Carter, Pat Grant and a couple of other officers, who are the first British officers to be in Colditz. All have only just arrived and are uncertain of what the future holds for them, Carter believing that they are to be executed.
Ultimately they are relieved when a member of the Polish contingent cheerfully welcomes them to Colditz.

Von Eisinger: (to German guard) You don't propose to remain there, do you?
Guard: Orders, sir.
Von Eisinger: Nonsense! People will think I'm under house arrest. Besides, your uniform clashes with the wallpaper. |
