It is three weeks after the escape. Dick Player is brought back to Colditz. Muir is in hospital after being shot trying to escape. Ulman questions Player regarding the methods used in their escape from Colditz.
There has been a shake up in the castle in reaction to the escapes. The Kommandant is officially threatened with dismissal, although he is told unofficially that he is doing a very good job in a difficult position.
A new man has arrived to take up his position as second in charge at the castle. He is S.S. Major Horst Mohn, a war hero who has been badly wounded at Stalingrad, and who at one time was a personal member of Hitler's staff. He has many connections in high places.
Major Mohn immediately starts trouble. He is jealous of Simon Carter and the loving letters which he receives from his wife, and he seeks to undermine the relationship by censoring all of the prisoners' mail personally. He is also suspicious of the Swiss and questions their neutrality to the Kommandant. He starts opening the Red Cross parcels, removing the packaging and leaving everything in a mess.
When Lieutenant Colonel Preston complains to the Kommandant about Mohn's behaviour, the Kommandant hints to him that there is very little that he can do, and that he is no longer in charge of Colditz - Mohn is. He warns Lieutenant Colonel Preston that Mohn would love a bit of trouble as an excuse to summarily execute a couple of prisoners.
Preston warns the men not to start any trouble for a while. Carter is appointed as new Escape Officer, and asks Player what went wrong with their escape. Player says that the one thing which is essential to any escape is the gaining of more time before the absence of escaped prisoners is noticed and reported.
