Three British Commandos have been captured by the Gestapo, and brought secretly to the gaol in Colditz town, which comes under the jurisdiction of Colditz Castle.
Hitler has ordered all Commandos to be shot and the men know that these men have been condemned to die. Lieutenant Colonel Preston visits the Kommandant in an effort to have the men brought up to the castle with the other prisoners, and eventually the Commandos are brought to Colditz, to the Prominente Block, where they are imprisoned.
The Kommandant goes away for a few days, and the men decide that they will hide the Commandos within Colditz, but will break out of Colditz to make it look as though the Commandos have escaped. In doing this, they will have to sacrifice one of their best escape routes, the one which was used successfully by Pat Grant and Phil Carrington.
Unwittingly, they have fallen into a trap devised by SS Major Mohn. It was his idea to have the Commandos brought up to the castle in the hope that the British would do something like this, and in the end the British give away one of their best escape routes for nothing.
The Commandos are taken away. The Kommandant says that they are to be taken to Oflag XVll but when Major Mohn says that he will act as escort he is not so sure.
