In one of the hammier entries in the Columbo repertoire, actors Lilian Stanhope and Nicholas Frame are about to begin a run of Macbeth in a London theatre. The production is being financed by Sir Roger Haversham, who is also Lilian's lover. However, Lilian is only pretending to be in love with Haversham in order to ensure his support for the play. When Haversham discovers that Lilian is really in love with Frame instead, he visits the two actors in their dressing room just before the opening night performance, and threatens to cancel the production there and then. A fight ensues during which Lilian accidentally kills Haversham.
Lilian and Frame store Haversham's body in a trunk until their performance is over, after which they take it to Haversham's home and set up a scene making it look like Haversham was killed by falling down the stairs.
Columbo happens to be in London on an official visit to Scotland Yard, and tags along in the investigation of Haversham's death. The coroner soon discovers that Haversham's body was moved after being killed, but Columbo needs to set up a trap to get the two actors to admit their foul deed.
