Nelson Hayward is running for office but despises his campaign manager Harry Stone, so he devises an ingenious plan to dispose of him. Hayward invents some death threats against himself, which results in him being given police protection. He tricks Stone into disguising himself as Hayward in order to distract the police so that he (Hayward) can then sneak away to visit Linda Johnson, with whom he is having an affair, supposedly to tell her that the affair is over. In reality, Hayward follows Stone out to his beach house where he shoots him, hoping to pass the murder off as a case of mistaken identity, in which whoever was making the death threats against Hayward mistook Stone for Hayward and killed him.
Once Columbo is called into the case, he immediately notices some inconsistencies in Hayward's story, but needs to set a trap to prove Hayward's guilt.
