Faded film and dance star Grace Wheeler Willis is desperate to stage a comeback with a new production. However, she needs $500,000 to fund the project and her husband, Dr Henry Willis, refuses to provide the money.
Grace decides to murder Henry so she can inherit the required funding. She gives him a double dose of sleeping pills. She then goes to the projection room in her house for a viewing of one of her old films, with her butler, Raymond, as the projectionist. Raymond starts the film running, but leaves between reel changes to watch TV with his wife, the maid, Alma, in another part of the house.
While the film is running, Grace goes to Henry's car, retrieves his gun, and goes up to Henry's room. Henry is sound asleep from the heavy sleeping medication, so she puts the gun in his hand, points the gun at his head and pulls the trigger to make it look like Henry committed suicide. As a finishing touch, she places a medical report showing that Henry needed a prostate operation on his body to make it look like he was reading it and got depressed over his health.
After locking Henry's room from the inside, Grace climbs out a window, down a tree, and back into the projection room, only to discover that the film had broken while she was away. She splices the film and resumes her seat to watch the end of the film, at which point the butler reappears to tidy up.
Although Columbo as usual manages to amass enough evidence to show that Grace must have murdered her husband, there is an extra twist at the end of the story which makes this one of the classic entries in the Colombo catalogue.
