Film director Alex Bradley has rocketed to the top of his profession despite his youth, but has a skeleton in his closet. A few years ago, the sister of his friend Leonard Fisher was killed while doing a motorcycle stunt for one of Bradley's early films. Although Bradley was on the scene at the time of the accident, he did not summon help which would have saved the woman's life, since he didn't want any witnesses to the accident, which was a result of his negligence in setting up the stunt.
Unknown to Bradley, a film of the accident showing his negligence has survived and fallen into the hands of Fisher, who now threatens to release the film to the police and media and thus ruin Bradley's career.
Bradley claims that the film is a fake and asks Fisher for a few hours in which he can prove this by having the film analyzed. However, he uses the time to set up a murder, in which Fisher is lured onto a movie set and electrocuted. In an attempt to hide the identity of the victim, Bradley takes Fisher's body to a beach and smashes off his face with a hammer (Fisher's fingerprints were burned off during the electrocution).
However, Bradley fails to notice that a book has fallen out of Fisher's jacket on the beach, and on the flyleaf of the book, Fisher had written Bradley's private phone number. When Columbo discovers this, he is led to Bradley as a suspect and the hunt for proof of his guilt is on.
