One of the cleverest entries in the Columbo catalogue finds Sean Brantley and Dian Hunter, co-owners of a fashion and scandal magazine called Bachelor's World, engaged to be married. However, Brantley is constantly seen living it up with the magazine's many shapely young models. Hunter summons Brantley to her office and a blazing row ensues, in which she tells him she has had enough, and plans to sell the magazine to British media mogul Sir Harry Matthews. Hunter then announces that she is flying to London that night to meet with Matthews. Brantley appears distressed at this news, since if Hunter sells the magazine, his playboy lifestyle will come to an end.
In a departure from the usual Columbo formula, where the murder is revealed at the start, we see Hunter being driven to the airport by her chauffeur. On the way, a stop is made at a restaurant where the chauffeur is sent in to get some food for Hunter to take on the flight to London. While the chauffeur is inside the restaurant, he hears a shot fired outside. Rushing outside to investigate, he can see nothing wrong, so he returns to the restaurant, collects the food and continues with the drive to the airport.
Upon arrival at the airport, Hunter emerges from the limo bundled up in a heavy coat and scarf, and wearing dark glasses.
The next day, Matthews calls from London to report that Hunter never arrived for her meeting. In Los Angeles, Columbo is assigned to investigate Hunter's disappearance. He become convinced that Hunter was murdered and that another woman took her place in the limo and on the flight to London. Naturally, he suspects Brantley. He faces one problem, however: there is no trace of Hunter's body. Has Brantley found some ingenious way of disposing of the corpse, or has Columbo finally made a mistake and accused an innocent man of murder?
Since we do not actually see Brantley commit the murder at the beginning, the viewer is kept guessing right up to the end. | | There are no foreign summaries for this episode: Contribute |

Ian Buchanan's native Scottish accent is quite noticeable several times. |

When the postcard supposedly sent from Milan by Dian Hunter to Brantley is seen in a closeup shot, the stamp on it is quite plainly a purple 'Machin' stamp from Great Britain, with a side-face portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. |
