Vivian Dimitri is a successful real estate agent who specializes in selling multi-million dollar homes. After finalizing a particularly spectacular deal, she arranges a Friday evening meeting with her boss, Charlie Chambers, to go over the paperwork.
However, it turns out that 10 years ago, Vivian's husband was arrested and sent to prison for embezzlement. He was caught because of a tip-off from Charlie, arrested by Columbo and died of a heart-attack in prison so Vivian is out for revenge against both of them.
After confronting Charlie with the fact that she knows he was the informer, she shoots him in his office. She then borrows his wallet and goes out for a romantic meal and a night at a hotel with Leland St. John, a married man with whom she is having an affair. At one point in the evening, she uses Charlie's bank card to withdraw some cash from a teller machine and after leaving Leland, she plants the cash with the receipt on Charlie's body in an attempt to show that he was still alive at the time she was with Leland.
The story is told in flashbacks, with the "present" setting being the funeral of Columbo's wife who was apparently killed by Vivian to make Columbo feel the pain of losing a loved one (although we are not given the details until later) and sections of the story are told from the points of view of various characters.
