Description:
Columbo was from the old school of non -conformist detectives, bearing many similarities with Hercule Poirot, as he painstakingly pieced together cases and never took any evidence at face value. Created by Richard Levinson and William Link, (creators of Mannix, Ellery Queen and Murder She Wrote), it has been said that the character of Columbo was based on Petronovich, the detective in Doestoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Columbo takes us back to an age of super-literate, intelligent television.

Columbo differed from Agatha Christie's master detective in that the viewing audience were always aware of who had committed the crime, before the detective arrived. So, as opposed to an edge-of-the-seat drama, each case becomes a battle of wits, a game of cat and mouse, with the denouement a result of the deductive talents of Lieutenant Columbo. The joy of the series was always in watching the master detective at work. Abhorring violence, Columbo only ever once used a gun, in Playback. His unconventional methods led to much eye-rolling at the police department: Columbo was seen as a 'madman' by his more conventional rival Sgt. Kramer (Bruce Kirby), yet the Lieutenant always solved the crime.
