A History of Art in Three Colours

This was certainly an original, and highly personal, approach to the history of art. It also tended, however, to cherry-pick those facts that seemed to agree with some of Dr James Fox’s preconceptions, and exclude others. How could he visit Dresden, talk about Augustus the Strong and not mention Johann Friedrich Böttger’s discovery of porcelain, often described as “white gold”? Or indeed how could he not mention cobalt, the blue for which Saxony was the main European source at the time? Read more
