The presidential election of 1824 ends in a deadlock with no candidate receiving a majority of the electoral or popular vote. John Quincy Adams, who finished second in both electoral and popular votes, ascends to the presidency with the help of Henry Clay when the election goes to the House of Representatives. But his tenure in office is every bit as stormy as his father's due to infighting with political rivals and he is voted out of office in the election of 1828.
