Outside the castle, Gennai informs the gang that they can't follow Myotismon now that he has shut the gate. However, the gate can be reopened, so he instructs them to go to his home. They follow a searchlight to a lake, and the water parts, revealing stairs leading down. The gang eventually arrives at Gennai's house, and inside, Gennai shows them a map of Japan and of Myotismon's location. He then retrieves ten keycards with images of digimon on them. However, since the control console for the gateway only has nine slots, one card is a fake.
That night, Izzy talks to Gennai, who explains that the Digital World comes from computer data in the Real World. Gennai also explains that unlike digimon, he himself has no attributes, which classify all digimon into either Data, Virus, or Vaccine. Izzy then tells him that his digimon analyzer can only access information on digimon that he himself has seen, not the other kids. Gennai promises to fix it.
The next morning, Gennai gives Izzy his computer back, now with an adapter for their digivices. He then wishes them good luck, and they later depart. They find the castle guarded by Devidramon, so Tentomon digivolves into Kabuterimon and then MegaKabuterimon. He destroys the guards, and the explosion fixes the gravitational problems, making everything right-side up.
The gang soon comes to the gateway but can't decide on the correct order. Izzy notices that on the console, each column of slots has a sign of Leo, Sagittarius, and a monkey. The castle then begins collapsing, sealing them in the chamber. With no choice but to go ahead and try, the gang elects Tai to choose the order of cards. However, he chooses Izzy to do it.
Motimon suggests using his computer, and Izzy pulls up data on different digimon. He then realizes that Leomon, Centarumon, and Etemon represent both the three signs and also Data, Virus, and Vaccine. He then aligns the cards by classification and level, but they still need to figure out which card is fake, Agumon or Gomamon. Dokugumon and a swarm of smaller spider digimon then attack, so Gomamon, Gabumon, and Palmon digivolve to their Champion forms and fight. However, they are soon in trouble when Dokugumon traps them in its web. Garurumon then digivolves into WereGarurumon, and after freeing Togemon and Ikkakumon, he fights Dokugumon. Meanwhile, Tai chooses the Gomamon keycard, activating the gateway. WereGarurumon destroys Dokugumon, and the gang runs through the gate.
They wake up in the snow-covered camp that they originally departed from, but their digimon are nowhere to be seen. The gang fears that the digimon didn't make it through, but their partners then show up, having gone to find food. The group then prepares to start their search for the eighth child...
