The Dark Heart of Friendship - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Tommy is back home, watching TV with his parents. He sees a commercial for a new toy and asks his parents if they can buy it for him. They sarcastically say they will, but Tommy believes them. His brother then calls him "dense" and reveals that they were teasing him. Tommy's parents tell his brother not to call him that because it will hurt his feelings. They then ask Tommy's brother to go to his room, and as he does, he tells them that they're not helping Tommy by always letting him have his way. After he then says that Tommy doesn't ever have to depend on himself, Tommy starts yelling that he hates him.
Tommy suddenly wakes up alone in a volcanic wasteland and begins searching for the gang. He then runs into a digimon, who begins throwing fireballs at him. Unable to Spirit Evolve while dodging fireballs, Tommy runs. Outside, Bokomon and Neemon see Tommy in trouble through a viewing globe, and Bokomon realizes that the fortress is actually Sakkakumon, the Beast Spirit of Mercurymon! Back inside, Tommy is saved by a cloaked digimon who introduces himself as Asuramon. Asuramon volunteers to help him look for his friends.
Elsewhere, Koji is wandering through a forest. He hears a mysterious voice, so he Spirit Evolves. After taunting Koji/Lobomon, the digimon behind the voice appears and is revealed to be Karatenmon. He demands that Koji/Lobomon hand over his Spirit. Koji/Lobomon refuses, so the two battle. Karatenmon dodges all of his attacks. He states that he knows Koji/Lobomon's heart, allowing him to know what he is going to do before he does it.
Meanwhile, Tommy is thirsty from the heat, so Asuramon runs off to get water. Tommy then sits down and has a flashback about being in a park with his family. He is tired and complains, so his parents agree to take a break. When his parents go to get him a drink, his brother sits down and tells him that in the real world, he won't always get what he wants. Asuramon then returns with water. After Tommy drinks it, Asuramon asks what is wrong. Tommy explains that his brother was mean to him, and Asuramon states that people like his brother don't deserve to live. Tommy is surprised that he said that, but Asuramon said he was only kidding. The duo then continues walking. Back in the forest, Koji/Lobomon is losing the battle. Karatenmon states that his weakness is that he is afraid to have friends.
Tommy and Asuramon eventually arrive at a small mountain. Tommy states that it's too hot and that they won't find his friends there, but Asuramon replies that he himself needs to go there and that he saved Tommy's life. Tommy then realizes that something is wrong with their friendship, since Asuramon seems to be keeping score. When Tommy says that to him, Asuramon rips away his cloak, revealing himself to be the digimon that attacked earlier.
As Koji/Lobomon states that he doesn't need friends or family, which prompts Karatenmon to realize something about Koji/Lobomon's mother, Asuramon demands Tommy's Spirit and says that no one would want to truly be his friend. Tommy then Spirit Evolves. However, his ice attacks are useless against Asuramon's fire attacks. Tommy/Kumamon eventually ends up falling into a crevice above lava.
Meanwhile, Koji/Lobomon Beast Spirit evolves and defeats Karatenmon, revealing his fractal code. After Spirit Evolving, Koji/Lobomon takes his code. An eyeball portal then appears, and Koji steps through it. His sphere on Sakkakumon stops glowing.
After falling over the edge, Tommy/Kumamon manages to hook onto the wall with his ice. Asuramon leans over the edge and tells him to give him his Spirit, but Tommy/Kumamon breaks through the ground beneath Asuramon with his ice, causing him to fall into the lava. Relieved, Tommy/Kumamon climbs up, but Asuramon jumps back out. He tells Tommy/Kumamon that he'll never have any real friends, causing him to realize that his brother was right. Tommy/Kumamon then Beast Spirit Evolves and defeats him. After Spirit Evolving back, he takes Asuramon's fractal code. The eyeball portal appears, and Tommy steps through. His sphere on Sakkakumon stops glowing as he is then teleported outside to Bokomon and Neemon.
