Tai and his six friends Matt, Sora, Izzy, Joe, Mimi, and T.K. are at summer camp for the summer. One day in the middle of the August heat a blizzard comes. Outside the seven kids find little blue devices which transport them to the Digital World. There they meet their Digimon partners. Tai meets Koromon, Matt meet Tsunomon, Izzy meets Motimon, Sora meets Yokomon, Mimi meets Tanemon, Joe meets Bukamon, and T.K. meets Tokomon. The Digimon Kuwagamon attacks and strands them on a cliff. The digimon grow bigger by "digivolving" and battle Kuwagamon, but he destroys the cliff, sending them into the river below.
After getting out of the river the gang heads to the beach where they find telephones. They try to call for help, but the phones don't work and say a bunch of weird stuff. Then Shellmon attacks and defeats all of the Digimon, that is until Agumon digivolves into Greymon!
After their first day in the Digital World, the gang camps out in a trolley on a island in a lake. They take turns watching guard. Agumon accidentally angers the digimon Seadramon, and it attacks. None of the digimon can do any damage, and for some reason Agumon can't digivolve into Greymon. In a effort to save Matt from Seadramon, Gabumon digivolves into Garurumon and beats him.
After leaving the forest, the seven children travel across the desert to a Yokomon Village, where all of the water has dried up. Then Meramon attacks, and the rookies' attacks are just making him bigger. Then Biyomon digivolves into Birdramon and fights Meramon.
The gang winds up at a factory, and they search it for any signs of life. Tai, Sora, and Joe find Andromon trapped, but when they free him he attacks them! Greymon and Garurumon can't beat him, but Tentomon manages to digivolve into Kabuterimon and destroy the Black Gear.
After revealing that there is an eighth DigiDestined, Gennai informs the gang that Myotismon also knows of the eighth child and is heading to Japan to find him or her. By sending Agumon and Palmon into Myotismon's castle as spies, the gang is able to sneak inside, where they discover that Myotismon possesses a giant gateway that can connect back to the Real World.
Trapped in the Digital World while Myotismon is in Japan, the gang turns to Gennai for help. He informs them that the gateway can be reopened with special keycards, but the only problem is that they don't know the cards' correct order.
Now back in the Real World, the gang heads to Highton View Terrace, where they soon realize they all once lived at. Meanwhile, Myotismon gives out copies of the eighth child's tag and crest in order to locate him or her. Mammothmon then rampages through the city.
As Myotismon's henchmen continue searching for the eighth child, the gang heads to Odiva. However, when they run out of money, they convince Sora's cousin to give them a ride and later run into the squid-like Gesomon.
As Tai and Izzy reunite with their families, Kari's cat Miko finds a digivice in the house and accidentally knocks it over the balcony! Another cat finds it and runs off with it, leading to a chase between Miko and the other cat. Both Myotismon's henchmen and Izzy detect the eighth digivice, but who will get to it first?
The gang splits up to find the eighth child, and Mimi and Sora run into SkullMeramon. Meanwhile, Gatomon realizes that Kari is the eighth child.
On their way home, Matt, Tsunomon, TK, and Patamon run into Pumpkinmon and Gotsumon, who just want to have fun in the Real World.
With Wizardmon's help, Gatomon realizes the truth: not only is Kari the eighth child, but she herself is Kari's partner! After revealing this to Tai and giving him Kari's digivice, Gatomon and Wizardmon then set off to steal Kari's tag and crest from Myotismon.
Myotismon has his henchmen collect the city's inhabitants, but Sora leads a rebellion against their Bakemon captors. However, a DarkTyrannomon soon attacks.

Three years after his adventures with the other DigiDestined, Tai returns to the Digital World when Agumon is attacked by the evil Digimon Emperor, who has an advanced, black digivice. For some reason, Agumon can't digivolve, so he, Tai, Patamon, and Gatomon retreat into a cave, where Tai finds an unmovable digi-egg with the Crest of Courage on it. When Tai touches it, three digivices similar to the Digimon Emperor's are sent to TK's and Kari's new friends: Davis, Yolei, and Cody. Davis joins Kari and TK on a rescue mission, and when he is able to move the digi-egg, a digimon known as Veemon is released. In the forest, their digivices react to something nearby. They then venture into a large temple, where they find the Digi-Eggs of Love and Knowledge. When Yolei and Cody move them, Hawkmon and Armadillomon are released! After Yolei activates her Digi-Egg of Love, Hawkmon harnesses the power of Biyomon's digivolutions to armor digivolve into Halsemon; Cody's Digi-Egg of Knowledge allows Armadillomon to tap into Tentomon's digivolutions to armor digivolve into Digmon! However, when all but Davis and Veemon suddenly disappear, the Digimon Emperor arrives and tells Davis that he must choose which of the DigiDestined will be spared from Deltamon. Davis later sees the same wound on the Digimon Emperor as was on Ken and then realizes the truth.
With the knowledge of the Digimon Emperor's true identity, the gang attempts to confront him in the Real World. However, before they are able to, Ken retreats to the Digital World with the intentions of never returning. He then captures Greymon and tries to make him digivolve into MetalGreymon, but the forced digivolution instead results in the uncontrollable SkullGreymon!
Realizing that his Dark Rings are unable to fully control digimon above the Champion level, Ken creates the more powerful Dark Spiral, which doesn't restrict Ken's control to areas containing control spires. He then uses it on Agumon and forces him to digivolve into a dark version of MetalGreymon!
As Tai, Matt, and the gang journey through the Digital World to confront Ken and MetalGreymon, they locate the Digi-Egg of Friendship. Although none of them can pick it up at first, it later activates after Davis learns a lesson in friendship. Using the new digi-egg, Veemon harnesses the power of Gabumon's digivolutions and armor digivolves into Raidramon, but will it be enough to stop MetalGreymon?
When Biyomon is injured, Sora gets the gang to go on a rescue mission. They track her down to a wild western town, but are captured by Starmon, who is under Ken's control.
Kari is taken to a dark dimension by Scubamon, who have been drained of their strength by Ken's Dark Spirals. However, not everything is as it seems to be.
When a digi-port opens in America, Mimi and her DigiDestined friend Michael go to the Digital World. The two meet up with the gang at Digitamamon's diner, where the owner claims to have turned over a new leaf. Yolei doesn't believe him due to his rude behavior, and Digitamamon suddenly attacking the gang doesn't improve her opinion of him, either. Mimi tries to stop the fight and tells him that he's being controlled by evil, but Digitamamon responds by knocking her down. An angry Yolei reprimands the digimon for this, and when she declares that she will start being sincere, the Digi-Egg of Sincerity emerges. The gang discovers the location of the Digimon Emperor's base, but when they later return to attack, they find that the base has disappeared. When they venture into the crater that the base used to occupy, Hawkmon is badly injured by a Dokugumon.
The gang once again finds the Digimon Emperor's base, which is now underwater. A giant whirlpool then appears, and Ken explains to Wormmon that it is a gateway to the powers of darkness. He then attempts to tap into the dark power, but Devimon confronts him and tells him to beware the darkness! Ken ignores the warning and takes Devimon's power, which he then uses to create his own digimon! Kimeramon, a combination of digimon body parts, is then released upon the unsuspecting gang!

That night, Takato scans images and information about Guilmon, the digimon he made up, into the digivice, creating a digi-egg within it.
