Dinnerladies takes us through the life and times of a works canteen staff, located somewhere in the north of England. Written by Victoria Wood's masterful hands, this is one of the finest, bittersweet working-class comedies seen on British TV.
The staff are an interesting but 'normal' hard-working bunch. The manager, Brenda (Bren), is sensible and dedicated; Dolly and Jean are endlessly bantering, competitive middle-aged women; Anita is gormless but well intentioned; and Twinkle is sluttish and sharp-tongued but decent underneath. In charge of this team, and perpetually baffled by female thought processes, is the easy-going Tony
Then there's Stan, an officious handyman who can quote the rule book chapter and verse. And not forgetting Philippa, the HR manager and Brenda’s mother, Petula who both ‘pop in’ every so often. With all these colourful characters, it’s no wonder that Dinnerladies is such a successful comedy.
