After disposing of Salamander in the time vortex, the time travellers arrive in contemporary London, specifically the curiously abandoned Underground. Once there, they discover that the railway system has become immersed in the web like substance which had earlier attempted to engulf the TARDIS. They also learn that this web serves as the vanguard of the Yeti, the robotic agents of the malevolent Great Intelligence.
The Doctor and his companions had previously encountered in the Himalayas in the 1930s. Almost four decades later, the Yeti are back with a vengeance, having been accidentally reactivated by the Doctor's old friend, Professor Travers.

Episode Notes |
| |
This episode marks the first appearance of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) on the series. He would later play an integral role throughout the series' run, making his final appearance in the Seventh Doctor serial in "Battlefield" in 1989. Besides the Doctor himself, he is the longest running character on the series. | Nicholas Courtney was originally cast as Captain Knight. The role of Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart was originally to be played by David Langton but when he pulled out at the last minute, the role was given to Courtney. He would continue to play the character, a brigadier in all his later appearances, on a semi-regular basis for another 21 years, until "Battlefield" in 1989. |
