Ellery Queen

Show FAQ
Did the series get canceled because star Jim Hutton died?
No. Absolutely not. Ellery Queen aired during the 1975-76 season on NBC. Jim Hutton passed away from liver cancer in 1979.

Is Ellery Queen star Jim Hutton any relation to actor Timothy Hutton?
Timothy Hutton is the son of the late Jim Hutton.

Was this the first TV series to feature the character of author/detective Ellery Queen?
No, there were two series that aired in the 1950's that featured the character of Ellery Queen as well as a radio show that aired in the 1940's.

Just who was Ellery Queen?
Ellery Queen was the pen name of authors and cousins Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. For simplicity's sake they named their detective hero Ellery Queen the same as their pen name.

I know I saw another Ellery Queen back in the 1970's. I think he was played by Peter Lawford. Am I crazy here?
You're not crazy. In 1971, a made for TV movie entitled "Don't Look Back" aired on NBC. It starred Peter Lawford as Ellery Queen and Harry Morgan as Inspector Queen. In the teleplay, Ellery was British and the Inspector was his uncle not his father. "Don't Look Back" was a pilot for an Ellery Queen series that was to air on alternating weeks with "McCloud" and "Columbo" as part of the NBC Mystery Movie. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) NBC executives hated "Don't Look Back" and Ellery Queen was never picked up as a weekly series at that time. Instead, "McMIllan and Wife" became part of the rotation on the NBC Mystery Movie.

How many actors from the show are still alive?
Tom Reese (Sgt. Velie) is the only series regular still alive. Recurring players John Hillerman and Ken Swofford are also still among the living. Jim Hutton died in 1979 and David Wayne passed away in 1994.

Has the series been released on DVD?
Yes, the series was released on DVD in 2010.
