Ellery Queen

Tom Reese (Sgt. Velie) did not appear in two episodes: The Adventure of the Chinese Dog and The Adventure of the Sinister Scenario.

Sgt. Velie's wife, Madge, only appeared in the show's premiere episode-The Adventure of Auld Lang Syne. She was played by Peggy Rea.

John Hillerman's role of Simon Brimmer on "Ellery Queen" led to him being cast by producers in his most famous role of major domo Jonathan Quayle Higgins on "Magnum P.I."

Only one episode, The Adventure of the Chinese Dog, took place in the New England resort town of Wrightsville which was a freqquent setting of the Ellery Queen novels.

An unused script for "Ellery Queen" was later adapted into an episode of "Murder, She Wrote" entitled "The Grand Old Lady."

The only episode based on a real life story by Ellery Queen was "The Adventure of the Mad Tea Party."

The character of muckraking newspaper reporter Frank Flannigan was based on Walter Winchell, a muckraking reporter/radio host of the era in which the show was set (the 1940's).

Some unused scripts for "Ellery Queen" were later adapted and used on the short-lived NBC mystery series "The Eddie Capra Mysteries." Ken Swofford, who played Frank Flannigan on EQ also appeared in that series.
