2 :01x02 - Hacking Tornadoes

Feb/28/2013
If The Wizard of Oz was set a few decades in the future, Dorothy might never get swept out of Kansas. In this episode of Hacking the Planet, host John Rennie explores what makes tornadoes so formidable, and asks if humans could ever slow or control their spin. Rennie’s first stop is VorTECH Lab at Texas Tech University, where lead geek Dr. Darryl James shows him around (and around and around and around) their gigantic twister simulator. Later on, meteorologist Joe Golden explains his elaborate plan for freezing tornadoes in their tracks, literally: his idea involves pumping dry ice into the vortex using unarmed aerial drones. Rennie also hangs out with a group of storm chasers—cause every show about tornadoes needs to feature least one daredevil storm chaser—and talks to a Swiss engineer who’s developing a method to harness tornado winds as a form of alternative energy.
