Trish is finding it hard to keep things running smoothly at the Job Centre. She has a world-of-work seminar to run and difficult employee Angela returns to work fresh from winning a tribunal. Karl is the only member of staff Trish can rely on, but he has reached the end of his tether as well.
Trish attempts to boost Brownall Job Centre’s figures by calling in the army. Sergeant Steve Fox finds himself on the receiving end of a very different kind of interest though. George goes undercover to try and trap a man who’s signing on and working as a decorator, but things don’t quite go to plan.
Following the sudden closure of a local factory, the job centre is inundated with newly unemployed jobseekers. With everyone working flat out, Trish is forced to help but she struggles with the computer and reveals a shocking, somewhat disturbing, secret.
The job centre is due an inspection and Trishis on the look-out for the mystery shopper who’s going to file a report. Karl is more interested in working with George as they prepare to interrogate a pair of benefit cheats.
Trish is busy with staff appraisals and Danielle is feeling the pressure. Angela though is in an unusually good mood and the after the cause is revealed, George believes that she’s not telling the complete truth and seeks revenge. Karl finally manages to find himself a girlfriend.
Trish celebrates her birthday and receives a life-changing surprise, or so she believes. Needing dome time to work out what it all means, she makes Karl acting manager much to his horror. He beleives that nobody will listen to him, and he’s right. Paul siezes the opportunity to further his carpet fitting business and Danielle takes the opportunity to stop working.
