I pulled out my Freaks and Geeks dvd set today (as you can see by the episode images I added to the guide) and watched the pilot episode. While viewing it I wondered why the show died an early death. It was well made, well scripted and well acted, yet only lasted 18 episodes. Oh, and the music was kick ass. Having gone through high school at the exact time this show took place, this series is very meaningful to Me.
At least some of the gang moved on to bigger things. Linda Cardellini (Lindsay) moved on to a major part on ER. James Franco (Daniel) plays a major role in the Spiderman movie series. Jason Segel (Nick) was on How I Met Your Mother and CSI for a bit last season. Busy Philipps (Kim) was on ER for a season. Even Seth Rogen [Ken] (the least talented IMO) had a starring role in Undeclared and the the starring role in the feature film Knocked Up.
Its funny how the freaks all made it after the series ended. |

Because life isn't fair.
What ever happened to the Geeks? It was a good show. I also liked My So Called Life.

Oh, we are far beyond unfairness here. I better leave it at that.
How awesome is the box set, though? |

Love the box set.
The music is what made the series beyond awesome. I love it when a show can use a song to convey exactly what characters are feeling instead of pages and pages of dialog. |

Yes, especially with Nick. When he and Lindsay broke up and he was seen in his car upset, they had The Who'The Song is Over playing in the background. That really revealed what he was feeling.
The song is over
It's all behind me
I should have known it
She tried to find me
Our love is over
They're all ahead now
I've got to learn it
I've got to sing out
chorus:
I'll sing my song to the wide open spaces
I'll sing my heart out to the infinite sea
I'll sing my visions to the sky high mountains
I'll sing my song to the free, to the free
I'll sing my song to the wide open spaces
I'll sing my heart out to the infinite sea
I'll sing my visions to the sky high mountains
I'll sing my song to the free, to the free |

Perfect example. The song says way more than a few scenes of dialog ever could. |

Actors can do their best work when they are not just repeating lines. This show had good actors, and it gave them plenty of opportunities to actually act. |

I also think that each character had their own style. Each freak had a different personality and trait as did the geeks.
Sam - a wimpy, mama's boy with parents who loved each other
Neil - Jewish, better dresser, with a father who was cheating on his wife
Bill - ultra nerd, goofy, son of a single parent
Lindsey - tough yet smart, pretty and still discovering who she is
Kim - a b***h who hates school and authority, her mom is also a b***h who has no respect for anyone
Daniel - a car loving, school hating punk, likes having fun, his parents are bums.
Nick - a major pot head, loves music/playing drums, father is a hard assed military man...mom is mentioned once.
Ken - wise assed, clings on to people, has a big mouth...nothing known about his family. |
