| Day Of The Triffids |
|
Released On: April 04, 2005 Region: 2 Production Company: BBC Video
Description: This 1981 adaptation of John Wyndham's science fiction masterpiece is well-remembered for its spooky depiction of a post-apocalyptic London menaced by the giant, carnivorous triffids. For many years unrepeated on TV, now it's available to buy on DVD.
The opening episode is one of the best pieces of TV suspense ever, as Bill Masen (John Duttine) wakes up in hospital, his eyes bandaged, to a world which is irrevocably changed. The tension mounts as he waits for doctors who never come, and to pass the time he tells the story of the triffids in flashback to a tape recorder.
Faithfully adapting Wyndham's novel, the story depicts an eerily deserted London, its population, like the rest of the world, struck blind overnight. At first, the panicking blind victims are as much an intimidating threat as the deadly triffids, hungrily seeking out the few sighted to use as "guide dogs".
The triffids themselves are very well-realised, six-foot monsters which look convincingly plantlike. Their menace is enhanced by some superb sound design, and the production is dominated by the whipcrack of their striking stings and the eerie hollow thuds of their "talking".
Still surprisingly undated, the series has a superb cast, headed up by John Duttine as Masen. Ken Hannam's direction is impressive, and the location work of an empty London is a feat that will probably never be equalled.
