Many years ago, while playing croquet against his sister Alexandra, Sir George became so frustrated by her cheating that he lost his temper – hitting the ball so hard that it rebounded and accidentally killed her. Now Alexandra has been summoned up from the dead, and her imperious and overbearing manner is causing misery for her brother and the rest of the ghosts at Motley Hall. After Alexandra forbids Sir George to join the others for their regular Bridge evening, and then confiscates the ghosts’ playing cards, Bodkin finally takes matters into his own hands; by distracting Alexandra with a vulgar song, he enables Sir George to slip away from her and flee to the safety of the bell tower. Desperate to be rid of his bossy sister, Sir George pleads with Fanny, Bodkin, the White Lady and Matt for their help in driving her away. Fanny and Matt agree to talk to Alexandra in order to discover any weaknesses that they can exploit, and they soon learn that the reason she has returned is so that she can beat her brother at croquet. Leaving to prepare the croquet lawn for a match, Matt instructs Fanny to tell Sir George that he must deliberately lose the game to Alexandra, otherwise they will never be rid of her. Unfortunately, Fanny gets confused, and instead tells Sir George he must win.
