Gidget aired opposite The Beverly Hillbillies, (CBS) andThe Virginian, (NBC) Both shows had been on the air since 1962 and had strong followings. Gidget faced some strong competition and did not do well in the ratings. According to a Sally Field, the show's ratings did increase over the season and the show did make it to the top ten. But it was too late. The decision to take Gidget off the air had been made.
