Gilligan's Island

Show Tidbits
The original, unaired pilot of Gilligan's Island used the same opening scenes as episode one of season one, however the set of characters was a bit different. The Skipper, Gilligan, and the Howells were as they were in the series. The other male character was a high-school science teacher. Although referred to as a high-school teacher in the opening credits, this character is billed as "The Professor" in the closing credits. The other two female characters (Ginger & Bunny) were office secretaries from New York City on vacation in Hawaii.

The theme song for the original unaired pilot of Gilligan's Island bore strikingly little resemblance to the one we've all become familiar with. The original theme was a calypso-flavored ballad performed by a man with a Caribbean Island accent. The opening credits were an intermniable two minutes long and the closing credits were a minute long. The credit sequences were reworked considerably for the regular series.

Gilligan's Island was one of the shows that was caught in the mid-60s transition from Black & White to Color telecasting. Three seasons of Gilligan's Island were produced. The first Season (64-65) was shot and telecast in Black & White. Seasons 2 & 3 were in color.

As a result, very little of the footage shot in the first season was subsequently usable as stock footage. The credit sequence had to be completely reworked. The only usable footage was the long shots of the SS Minnow being tossed about on a dark and stormy sea. That footage was tinted to give the illusion of it being color.

In the first season credits, there is a long shot of the wrecked SS Minnow on a long, open expanse of beach. This was shot on location. The color footage for the 2nd & 3rd season depicted the battered Minnow beached in a narrow cove surrounded by trees. This was shot on the back lot set for Gilligan's Island.

The reworking of the credit sequence also allowed the now infamous "and the rest" vs "The Professor and Mary Ann" controversy in the title song to be resolved.
